this is absolutely true - supporting yourself with your core muscles and balancing with your arms - even pulling with your arms - puts everything you have through the pedals. Been discussing these things with my daughter since she is on her first drop-bar bike - and she's going FAST by nature - chased her again yesterday for 15 quick miles. As we get older we lean on the bars and this is a source of cervical strain, and a reason we want to go farther upright as we relax on the bike. So far, moustache is as far upright as I want to go. I'm sure I'll eventually build a bike with an Alba cockpit. Always ride with bent elbows. Re: [RBW] Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?
No, I think my experience is similar to Jay's, a few minutes here or there. But I also don't ride for speed. Exactly, I could ride a funny bike with huge TT bars if I just wanted to go fast. I would rather be comfortable. Yes, I feel a bit slower vs drops or even flat bars, but I'm much more upright, and comfortable, and having more fun, so who cares. Re: [RBW] Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?
Yes. I ride slower on albatross bars because I ride the bike that I have albas when I am not in a hurry. I can go just as fast when i have to: running late to catch my commute train, for example. Re: [RBW] Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?
Note that bending at the hips more also brings into play additional muscles; I can feel a slight increase in power, independently of aero (I feel it even a lowish speeds) when I go into the hooks or shove back and grab the hoods or ramps with bent elbows. So there are two speed benefits for a more-bent-over position, ceteris paribus of course. [RBW] Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?
Albatross bars are slower than drops if same power is applied and you are in the drops. The aero dynamics going from brake hoods down to drops is over one mph advantage by itself. Of course you could mount your albas low enough and run a stem long enough to achieve the same aerodynamics then they would be equal. :). So wider, higher, and a more upright riding position guarantee they will be slower. Based on equal power imput.
