[RBW] Micro-hack: Modifying brakelever body shape for flared drops

2018-04-10 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Nice hack, well documented to. I'm 2 days in with cowchippers/analog zero stem
replacing noodles in my Saluki... Love the bars so far. Haven't noticed the
same issue you note with your levers but I'll pay closer attention to that
tomorrow.

Care to share a couple wider shots of that bike with the cowchippers?!?

The bike fits the rider, not the other way 'round.

Chapeau

[RBW] Micro-hack: Modifying brakelever body shape for flared drops

2018-04-10 Thread Bill Lindsay

My new Monstercross build has Salsa Cowchipper bars, which I love. The
only tiny negative for me was the way the slanted brakelevers fit in my
hand. I use SRAM S500 levers, which have a flattish top. With the
Cowchipper bars, the brakelevers are slanted radically, and the corner of
that flattish top is now on top of the brakelever, and it digs into my palm
when I'm on the hoods. Here's a photo to help illustrate what I'm talking
about:

The top corner of that trailing edge of the brakelever body has a lump to
it. I've got some experience modding brakelevers, so I'm not shy about
it. I peeled back the brakelever hood, cut away a little patch of the
shellacked cloth tape to expose that top corner, and went at it with a flat
file.

It's totally OK to do some sculpture on the plastic bodies of your
brakelevers, if you want to do that. I did a short mountain bike ride with
the new shape this morning and it was tons better. I might scrub away a
little more material, or I might be done.
