Re: [RBW] New-to-me Sam! Advice/recommendations?

2021-11-04 Thread Jared Wilson
*Just* installed some 700x38 Gravelking Sk's on a project bike.

Haven't had a chance to ride it yet but they seem like a nice product,
especially for the price.

Measured in at 35.5 on some old Super Champion rims.

Some good suggestions coming in!

I'm VERY interested in the Barlow Pass in the endurance casing.
Aesthetically speaking, the RH tires can't be topped. But...I think I might
go with the Gravelkings when it comes time.

Schwalbe Marathon Racers come in a 38, which will be more like a 36 or so
depending on the rim. I ride the 35's, 33.3 actual on 19mm ID rims, and
they ride very nicely, and they last. The only other tire I had that lasted
like these is the Big Ben raceguard ones. I ride mine @35-40 rear, 30-35

Re: [RBW] New-to-me Sam! Advice/recommendations?

2021-11-04 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Ben:

I would certainly change the brake cables. If the housings look ok, leave them
(especially since changing them would require losing that nice tape/twine job).
Brake cables fail; housings just get rusty and old.

If the shifter cables look good, you can probably leave them in place. Look
where the cables go under the bottom bracket. That’s where they will usually
get rusty and old first. If they look good and work smoothly, apply a little
oil (such as Phil’s) at the BB shell and leave them. Again, if the housings
look good, no need to replace them.

Brakes are much more important than shifting—take care of them first!

[RBW] New to me, Sam Hilborne coming soon.

2013-10-18 Thread blakcloud
The demo Sam Hilborne was up on the Riv site this morning and I bought it.
Should be here in about two weeks and I am pretty excited. I have never
bought a bike I have never sat on before, so this is a test and a little
nerve racking. I will post photos when it arrives and after I modify it
slightly with parts I have on hand. It comes with drop bars and silver bar
end shifters, which will be changed out to Albatross bars and Dura Ace bar
ends. I also have Hetre tires that will be swapped out. Porteur rack and
basket will be added for functionality.

This bike will be used for leisure rides with my wife who has her Betty
Foy.

I have officially entered the RBW Owners Bunch with my own Rivendell!!

Thomas

[RBW] New to me Sam

2013-03-10 Thread Edwin W
Thanks to this group for all of the advice and parts!
Here is
my Sam, finally built up in time for my birthday this week.

Basic parts list:
Riv Sugino Chainguard/40/26 I'll run it 1x8, see how often I use the granny
and that will determine whether I get a FD
Riv's deore RD
Basic 11-32 8sp cassette from LBS
Nothing special wheels - will bring my dynamo over from my current daily
ride
Gamoh porteur front
Wald 139
Public bikes rear rack (gotta have a spring)
Longboard fenders
Alba
Riv's shimano brake levers
Riv's single microshift bar end shifter (friction left, used on R)
Newbaum's twine and shellac

Super excited to ride!

Interestingly, in this Riv-deficient town (Nashville), I was in my LBS
picking something up yesterday and they said they had just put together a
new 52 Sam for a local woman! Now there are two more in this town! I have
seen another single TT orange Sam, an AHH several cool Rivs and Rivish
bikes that my friend's neighbor has, but not many others.

For those Riv packers - the LBS staff was duly impressed!
