Turns out I used two 700C wheels to test with instead of the 650B and 700C
I thought I had grabbed. Both are obviously 700C.

2015-09-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I would not be surprised if the general product line was mix and match.
I've installed metal 650B fenders, 40 and 50 mm wide, as well as 700C PB
polycarb fenders, on this same, 26" wheel bike, and the front I received
just required too much massaging to be 650B.

I'm glad they got at least one of yours right! And glad they paid for the
return. Though it took more work than I anticipated, I hope that mine last
at least a couple of years. If and when they break, I'll hold out for
Berthoud 650B X 40 stainless steel.

Re: [RBW] Re: '03, Chauncey-modified, Honjo-fendered

2015-09-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the compliments.

Steve, I'll post load photos eventually. The other day I rode home with ~25
lb in one pannier; it wasn't ideal but it was certainly manageble.

Michael: I'm not particularly handy myself; most of the technique was
simply to force myself to go slowly and think about each step in advance.

I used a Dremel, cutting at the forward end, so the alteration would be
less visible. A Dremel makes a pretty straight cut relatively easy to do. I
then used snips to cut long, gradual bevels; and snipped away ~3 mm along
the rolled edge along the uncut portion to allow folding. I then used
pliers to start a fold along the cut perimeter and finished it off by
gently tapping the folds with a hammer. The result is not perfectly
symmetrical, but it's close, and of course the manipulation blemished the
finish, but again, it's not too bad and it's hidden under the bottom
bracket.

2015-09-12 Thread Michael Hechmer
I think it looks very nice Patrick. Fendering a bike with horizontal
dropouts is always challenging. I have considered shortening a rear fender
myself. Since I almost never ride with a group in the rain, the added
length has no value add. My thought has been to have a rack that
eliminates the fender stays by providing its own fender attachment. Which
brings me to a question. Can you share more about how you shortened the
fender? I'm really good with wood but kind of clumsy at metalwork.

Re: [RBW] Re: '03, Chauncey-modified, Honjo-fendered

2015-09-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. All of this retrospective effort to turn this wonderful bike into a
sort of integrated (integrating racks, wiring, fenders) fun to ride but
useful errand bike has shown me concretely that so integrating a bike
requires a lot more than simply knowing what you'd like it to do and a lot
more than knowing how to braze good racks and braze-on adaptions. It really
does seem to be a matter of a kind of design wisdom that allows you to plan
everything from the very beginning.

Still, I'm happy with it; hell, I was happy with it when it had a Fly and
Planet Bike fenders. If the Honjos crack, so be it; it will be time, then,
for the, frankly, better fitting 650B 40 mm stainless steel Berthouds.

This is the 3d rear rack (and first front set) that Chauncey has made for
me; # 1 was too small; # 2 was too big; # 3 is almost (not quite, but good
enough) Goldilocks. Chauncey charges so little ($100 per rack) that, to sum
all up, I don't really mind.

I have the last rack for sale, if anyone is interested.

2015-09-11 Thread Peter Adler
Am I misunderstanding something? It looks to me like you've got the fenders
reversed: Front fender mounted on rear wheel, and vice versa. At least
that's the way my 700c Honjos lay out; otherwise, the rear fender isn't
long enough to install a fender-mount light.

Granted, undoing all that work and redoing it sounds really unappealing,
especially for a non-group rider in a rain-challenged region. It would be
hard to chide you for not doing it.

Speaking of fenders: I see that VO has 63 mm 29er fenders. Too bad they are
aluminum; I much prefer Planet Bike-type polycarb for abuse; my PB 60s can
be mashed, slashed, bashed, hashed, and thrashed and come back smiling.
They *will* bend if left under pressure in a car trunk in a hot SW summer;
but let them relax, and they'll return to shape.

I suppose stainless steel would work as well, but no one offers 63s in ss,
AFAIK.

The PBs don't rattle on rough dirt, if you mount them properly.
