Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet
I also use both types of Tubus clamps, and I really like them. One distinguishing feature: each type can be left on the bike if the rack is taken off. They use separate bolts for the clamping and the rack mount, so it's easy to remove and replace the rack. I've used the mid-fork clamps on my Riv Road, but currently use both to attach a Nitto Campee Classic (the one with detachable lowriders) to my girlfriend's San Marcos. She vastly prefers how the low panniers ride, compared to a basket on a rack above the front wheel. The Tubus mid-fork clamps are big and square (even more eccch than a p-clamp). But they definitely look more professional. As with all clamps on the frame, I protect with tape and innertube. Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet
I can speak to the virtues of both these gadgets, as I am using both to attach my Bruce Gordon racks to my Raleigh International. Bruce uses flat-steel rails to attach his rear rack, and advocates the better-grade Nitto P-clamps (and includes them with the new racks...but really, ecch. If I have a nicey-nice rack, I want the whole thing to look nice. So I replaced all the stock attachment widgets with Tubus rails/clamps/swivel mounts/extenders, and I'm much happier. The sizing of the Tubus clamps is a little more appropriate to steel tubing - not like the "close enough" of P-clamps. I've had much more secure attachment since I went to the Tubus bits, and a lot less noise. BikeBagShop.com also sells Tubus attachment bits. They have rotating 10% off specials on most of their product line throughout the year; Tubus and Ortlieb normally come up together, about 2-3 times a year. Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet
I give a +1 to this. I added racks to 2 older Motobecane and Peugeot frames that did not have barrel braze-ons. I used the Tubus adaptor clamps. It's a robust solution and, in my view, may work better many original braze-ons since you can place them precisely where they are most effective for the rack you are installing. An aside, if you haven't tried a Tubus rack... do so. Like many here, I had visions of front load carry... but discovered Tubus racks and Ortleib quick release panniers are extremely satisfying alternatives. If your bike is designed for rear loads, rejoice!!! Do not compromise the design. Complement it. You will not regret. I do not claim to actually know a thing about I take your point, but it wouldn't be a heavy load. On my "old blue", I carried a VO Campagne bag: http://t.co/NZdqKgXIKm And that's all I was thinking to carry on this one. I have been thinking though...I could be content with leaving the frame paint as is, and only adding the mid-fork braze-ons and re-painting the fork. All this is assuming the painter felt they could get a good match with the original orange. I have appreciated all the suggestions about having the fork re-raked...but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I didn't really want to change the bike's "soul." I just wanted to avoid the p-clamps :-) > Peter > (who sold his 58 orange, which was a tad small, then bought a 60 blue, and > then sold the 60 blue to buy a 60 orange, because Rambouillets are intended > to be orange.) Funny thing regarding these sizes. I think I may have been riding a 60cm all these years!!! I've been riding my new-to-me 58 around a little, and have found it very comfortable. I had it leaned up against my garage to take a picture a couple days ago, and I thought to myself, "I don't remember having that much seatpost showing on my old bike. Later, I stumbled on a Topeak frame pump that was always just a hair short to wedge under the top tube on my blue Ram. Lo and behold, it fit just fine on my new orange! I really was sure that my blue Ram was a 58cm, but now it's like I don't know anything anymore. Oh well. Also, I did measure the size of the seat tube on the orange and compared it against Riv's specs for the Rambouillet. It's definitely a 58. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Beside P clamps, Tubus makes machined, aluminum fork leg clamps for front low riders designed for forks that don't have the needed braze ons. These are threaded both for the clamping bolts and for the racks. Note: I've not used these for front low riders, but I have used one to mount a bottle dynamo, and judging solely from this very limited use I think it is safe to say that these clamps are a good alternative to the P clamp. $22/pr, but I'd choose these over the P clamps. Braze-ons are super easy to add to a steel bike – not sure about paint, though. I wonder if a pro like Bilenky could add them and only touch-up the surrounding area as an option to a full repaint. You might also take a look at Nova under their steel small parts to see what options you have for braze-ons: http://www.cycle-frames.com/bicycle-frame-tubing/home.php There are a number of choices, but I normally choose the smaller hourglass version for mid-fork mounts. Good time to add brake posts if you want them, too. -Ryan > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. one thing I regret not doing with my rambouillet was to have centerpull braze ons put on. If I had it to do over again, I would spec the new gran bois centerpulls to my rambouillet, and maybe midfork braze-ons. since the front end geometry wasn't exactly designed for low trail, you might want to consider having bilinky build a new fork instead with more rake for lower trail. Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet
Thanks for the color reference! Very helpful. I understand what you're saying about keeping the original orange. The frame paint is not 100% original, though. The original owner had a small dent repaired in the top tube, and the color match is slightly off. It takes the right light to see it, but then it cannot be unseen. Well, it's more obvious when looking at the bike from the side. Standing over the bike and looking down, the color is indistinguishable from the fork crown. Funny you mention that about the brake bridge. The seller pointed it out to me, and had a specially-filed washer to fix the angle. Wow! An original orange! Nice find! As we've posted in the past, that paint job was complex, and uses some less common colors and paints. The only other thing to be aware of was that some 1st Gen Rams had a rear brake bridge placement which was off, so you might need to be mindful of clearance and pad placement. But, unless the original paint was truly toast, I'd be tempted to leave it intact unless you find a color option which you truly like better. And the talented folks at Bilenky are well equipped to create that. [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet
I think any time you are doing a repaint it is a great time to think about braze ons. Mid-fork braze-ons are a super enhancement for any bike. While you are at it, I will add that I really like fork tips that have a braze on both on top and underneath. The underneath one you'll use for a fender and some racks. The one on top is useful for the Hub Area Rack. A Ram would be a splendid summer overnighter bike with a Hub Area Rack. Bilenky can get the decals from Rivendell. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. If you're gonna do that, might as well do a full 650b conversion! :-) I can't wait to get my 650bx42 Ram out on the road ... next year, that is. If you want to make the trip to Brooklyn there's http://www.johnnycoast.com/ who's the bestest. Or a million others with hungry torches. Though the couplers at Bilenky would be nice, especially considering murphy's law will return your stolen bike soon now that you've acquired a suitable replacement... -Kai On Sunday, December 28, 2014 11:11:04 PM UTC-5, Mark Wilkins wrote: > > Well, it's been three weeks since my blue 58cm Rambouillet was stolen. > I had a couple leads, but nothing ever panned out. > > I'd been spending a lot of time on CL/ebay, and found a 58cm (in > orange) that needed a new home.
