Tim,

The bike "performance" is what had me doubting the most. It wasn't until late
December that I started feeling like my old self again riding-wise. That was
almost 2 months after I started. That being said none of the rides were longer
than 5 hours. Planning on a few Brevets this year - we'll see how it goes. Good
luck on the r12!

[RBW] Re: Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?

2015-01-29 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Clayton, it's good to hear of your progress with the weight, but more so on the
bike. After 13 days of EBDJ eating I rode a 200k(I'm chasing and R-12). I ate
only salami and parmesan cheese (except for a big pickle for sodium and coffee,
black, for caffeine. I'm caffeine free except during long rides.) It was the
flattest ride I have ever done (intentionally) and I finished with only a short
bonk (which I somewhat mitigated with more cheese) in the last 25 miles. I was
pleased but since then (I'm almost 4 weeks into EDJ now) almost every ride has
been very low energy and slow. Admittedly some of that is due to winter riding
but my energy level on the bike has definitely been poor. Otherwise I feel good
and at last count had lost 8 lbs. I'm reading a lot on the subject and this
seems to make sense to me so I'm keeping at it. I'm not counting calories
either but I am certain I'm not consuming anything near what I do on carbs, and
I'm not hungry most of the time. Yesterdays food: Tea with coconut oil and ghee
at 5:30am, 3 eggs with can of salmon and bleu cheese at 11:00. Afternoon snack
of about 2 oz macadamias with some coconut flakes. Dinner was guacamole (1
large avocado, red onion, spices) and rack of lamb, about 6 oz (pre-packaged
and cooked from TJ's. Try it, it's delicious!) Normally I would have eaten
double the amount of lamb but I'm trying to not go overboard on the protein.
Then a snack later of about 2 oz almonds and coconut flakes.

[RBW] Re: Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?

2015-01-28 Thread Evan
Deacon: I've only counted calories for one day. Here's what I discovered:

BREAKFAST: 3 eggs cooked in one heaping tablespoon of butter, plus coffee
with one tablespoon of coconut oil. 440 calories

LUNCH: 7 ounces canned pink salmon with 1 tablespoon olive oil. 300 calories

DINNER: Four hefty chicken thighs, baked, with skin on, plus a large
plateful of kale cooked in ghee. 640 calories

That's a total of 1,380 calories, give or take. Since I am already (to use
Grant's expression from his book) thin as a clothesline, it seems clear
that I'll need to eat even more olive oil, butter, bacon, Greek yogurt,
avocados, critter, dark chocolate, coconut oil, etc. I'm willing to do
that, but I still have to wonder how so many Americans manage to consume
2,500 calories--or more--each day. (For the record: I didn't even think to
count calories until, about ten days into the EBDJ diet, I noticed my jeans
were especially baggy. Decided it might be good to do some counting.)

Clayton: Your results are inspiring.

[RBW] Re: Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?

2015-01-28 Thread Clayton.sf
Just adding my experiences to this.

Been doing the eating part since mid October 2014.
Added kettlebell and convict conditioning in November 2014.

To date I dropped 23 pounds and am able to do more sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups,
and squats than ever before. Blood pressure, blood work, etc. was deemed
"really good by any standard" by the doctor earlier this month (not that I was
ever told it was bad, but it was still nice to hear).

Mid November I went for one of my standard rides and felt like crap logging
some of my worst times ever. Early January I did the same ride again and broke
almost every personal record feeling great. In addition instead of my usual
hammer bar an hour I was fine riding on half a banana for 4 hours. We will see
how 12+ hour rides go, but so far so good. It does take time to adapt but for
me it has been totally worth it at least so far.

In terms of calories I don't worry much. I eat when hungry, drink when thirsty.

Dinner was bacon with Brussel sprouts, onions, and egg. The kids had seconds
and asked if we could have this again tomorrow.

Best,
Clayton, SF

I'm 1 1/2 weeks in... it's easier than I would have thought. I'm pursuing
weight loss so getting my calories 'up' isn't a goal for me right now. I
think I'm pretty consistant around 1500 calories a day right now, definitely
under 2000. But I'm more full from the fat filled meals than I would have
expected. I think any diet where I religiously take my healthy lunch to
work and avoid sweets and processed foods like I am right now would be an
improvement over my normal habits but the fact that I'm only 'hungry' and
not 'ravenous' between meals on this program is pretty great.
Here is a recipe I made last week that was quite tasty.

Pic... because it DID happen.

Fat calories add up quick. Are you sure you are counting them all in your
calculations? (I don't do calculations, just eating to hunger, so I have no
idea what it takes short of OCD level measuring to get any generally
accurate idea).

Hi Deacon,

Yep! I understand that EBDJ emphasizes fat, so in my scramble I leave all
the burger fat in the pan (definitely). Also, I often pour olive oil on the
dish just before I serve it. And sometimes I add a chunk of butter or ghee
to the pan before I add the onions. So I'm trying! :) Thanks.

Evan, shift your thinking about a meal centering around the protein to
thinking about the meal being surrounded by fat. Cream. Bacon. Tallow.
Butter. For your burger, for example, buy it 85% lean, and include all the
fat. Fat is not a waste to be chucked. It's the goodness to be consumed.

[RBW] Re: Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?

2015-01-28 Thread Evan
I've gone nearly a month now on the EBDJ diet regimen. No big cravings, no
problems. But I do find it difficult to actually ingest 2,500 calories per
day--especially if all I have for breakfast is coffee with butter and/or
coconut oil in it. Yes, I know I could load up on cheese and avocado and
Greek yogurt and yet more coconut oil, but dang. No wonder people lose
weigh on this diet! :) But seriously, if you-all have suggestions and/or
recipes for easy low-carb meals, please post them. Here's one of mine.

1 lb. grass-fed hamburger
1 onion, chopped
5 cloves garlic, chopped
1 bunch of spinach, roughly chopped (or one package of frozen spinach)
7 eggs, lightly beaten
seasoning (salt, pepper, hot sauce . . . )

Thoroughly brown the burger in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a
generous pinch of salt as you cook it. Set burger aside. Add onion and
garlic to pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for about two or three
minutes to soften. Turn heat to medium, put the hamburger back in the pan,
and then add the spinach. (If the spinach is frozen, thaw it and drain it
in a sieve--press the water out of it--before adding it to the pan.) Cook
the burger/onion/spinach mixture for about one or two minutes, with the lid
on the pan, until the spinach is slightly wilted and warmed through. Add a
few dashes of hot sauce to the eggs and then pour the eggs into the pan.
Stir gently and sporadically until the eggs are incorporated and cooked
through. Season as you wish. Serve. This dish is called Joe's Special or
Joe's Scramble. It looks like a mess but it tastes good. Substitute kale or
chard for spinach and that works, too.

I've been getting more into it, still at less than 50 grams of carbs a day but
curbing down by introducing more fat. I crave vegetables so I eat a big ass
Mediterranean salad 4 or 5 times a week. It's delicious.

It's been 2 months and I'm down nearly 20 lbs. Ive been doing a fast 25 minute
circuit at the gym every other morning, cycling, taking the dog for a walk or
playing basketball to work on endurance.

Here are my details from yesterday:

3:45 pm

1 can TJ sardines
.75 avocado w/pink Himalayan salt
1 small chunk triple creme Brie
1 small chunk Gouda
3 slices salami
1/2 pickled cucumber (home made, no sugar)

This was way too much food and I felt uncomfortable.

Then I did a fast 45 mile ride and halfway:

6:30 pm

2 small nuggets of home made pemmican.

Don't feel hungry at all.

5:00 am

1 small cup of coffee with heavy cream.

Just got back from the gym. Feeling good.

I'm 3 days in... and still need to finish the book. Basically just
sticking low carb at this point. Not ravenous, but definitely missing the
sweets and breads I normally help myself to. Today I had a couple
clementines for breakfast/mid morning snack. A nice lunch my wife packed
including turkey/cheese in a lettuce wrap w/ mustard, some baby carrots and
peppers and a couple olives... then dinner was a good test at a favorite
restaurant where I did my usual jalapeno burger sans bun and sub'd a garden
salad for the delicious fries... oh and 2 scotches! :) Probably not a
full execution of the diet's intent but it was a big step for me!

It's 6:00pm here in CT. I had my tea with coconut oil and ghee this morning.
That's all I've been having until noon, when I always eat lunch. I didn't get
lunch in until 2:00 today. It was Grant's yogurt/bleu cheese/coconut/macadamia
concoction (which I've kind of grown to like.) I'm a little hungry now but I'll
have dinner around 7:00. It will be a big salad with smoked chicken, bacon,
gorgonzola, avocados, cherry tomatoes and greens. I'm in my third week of EBDJ
eating and I don't get ravenous like when I eat carbs.
