[RBW] Re: Brake pads question.

2015-02-11 Thread Bruce Smitham
I use a thick rubber band and wrap it around the back of the pads before
tightening them. Seems to toe-in the pads just fine and you can adjust the
amount easier by wrapping once or twice. Good luck!

Hey Fellas,

Thanks for all the suggestions. Ordered the Supra 2 pads, thanks Jason for the
recommendation and John good advice you've accumulated from sources, I'll be
sure to use the Riv inner tube suggestion for setting the brakes up.

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: Brake pads question.

2015-02-08 Thread Surlyprof
Last time I was at Rivendell, I bought the Yokozunas they sell in both
smooth and threaded (I needed threaded). Their spacers and cupped washers
were really easy to set up and adjust. When I was there, I noticed all the
brake pads were toed in to the front to keep them from squealing which is
the opposite from what I had always done in the past. Keven suggested that
I take a piece of sandpaper, fold it in half, place it in the back and
compress the brakes to get the angle. I combined that tip with Grant's
bike geek tip on the Blug about using a section of inner tube as a parking
brake. It was just the right pressure so I could align everything with the
brakes engaged and then crank them tight in position. I can't speak to
longevity of the pads but I have had no problems with squealing brakes
since.

The guy on the picture doesn't look like he's having a good time.
Could it be due to the brake pads or simply not enough fiber?

Jason, I didn't know about this model, they look great. Basically
longer-lasting Thinlines!

You can use any pad that have the same post style Hugh. Like Doug said, I use
the cross pad on the front of all my bikes, they work great.

2015-02-07 Thread dougP
Hugh:

On Mike's recommendation, I tried a pair of Kool Stop's Cross Pads:

http://www.koolstop.com/english/crosspad.html

They are a lot shorter than the cartridge ones I had. I was wanting
shorter pads to allow the brake to open more for clearance for chubby
tires. Braking power seems the same. They are 55 mm long. Seems like
pads vary quite a bit in length.

Re: [RBW] Re: Brake pads question.

2015-02-07 Thread Goshen Peter
this is all I use on all my bikes. If they were too long as on one bike I
just dremeled it off at the first "ridge" then you can go ridge by ridge as
needed. A waste of good pad but squealing brakes are the worst!

Hugh,

Kool Stop Supra 2 might be a better option. The Supra 2 have
concave/convex washers which appear to be the same as the Thinline pads,
but with an Eagle 2 shape.
