It's an astounding difference. Most of my bikes have the quiet Shimano hubs
whereas one has a super-loud Hope rear. Coasting fast downhill on the Hope
is both badass and mortifying at the same time :-S

I worked on my daughters Clementines the other day and was stunned how LOUD the
LX hubs were. They actually made noise. Amazing how fast I’d gotten used to the
silence of fixed. Grin. But to most people who are at least one biscut in their
basket ahead of nutters, yes, the LX are s.
If you want really quiet (and really expensive, and fairly heavy, but very
nicely made), try an Onyx rear hub. The hub uses a sprag clutch, and is
essentially completely silent and without drag when coasting.

Shimano Sora rear hub on our grocery getter. Silent and smooth. Might be
the best value out there?

Some of them had some kinda "silent clutch" type thingy.

Ok thanks. I’ve had maybe 6 rear Shimano hubs that at least made some sort of
click, but these just spin. Good to know it’s all ok

Not sure about that specific hub---I can't remember whether my LX hub(s)
ratchet(s) or not---but on some bikes the hub ratchets and on some it
doesn't. I think of both as normal.
