[RBW] Re: FOUND, was WTB: Grip Kings

2010-10-18 Thread Philip Williamson
Thanks for the link, Stuart. That set shows skate deck platforms
attached to Eggbeater cleats, but I'm playing around with attaching
the platform to regular pedals, too. Closer to the Bullseye style of a
permanent wood pedal, rather than 'now you're clipless, now you're
platform' as shown.

Fairly straightforward: remove cage, fabricate brackets, screw deck
pieces on. You can make the skate decks any size, and big is
definitely better for big feet. You might like it.

Rob,

Maybe the skate deck pedals would accommodate your Vibram 5ingers:

In one of the photos Philip says something about using "extremely
flexible" shoes with them. I am really curious to try that idea
myself! (well, the pedals... not the 5ive Fingers... not quite yet.)

[RBW] Re: FOUND, was WTB: Grip Kings

2010-10-17 Thread rperks
I am curious if those of you with large feet that like the GK pedals
so much have flattish or high arched feet? I have high arches and
with the GK it felt like my feet were going to roll off the outside
edge and I had to use concentration to keep the load on my inner three
rows of foot bones. As stated before pedals are as or more personal
than shoes, and I am always on the lookout for wide pedals that will
fully support my keens. I have tried a few variations of clipless
pedals over the years but gave up when the combinations of ill fit and
having to carry two pair of shoes on my commute wore me down. Back to
flat pedals for years now.

Taking it to the next step have been trying to work out if it is
possible to ride in vibriam five fingers...

I put the Tioga blunt nubs on one side of mine. I don't care which
side I use, really, unless it's raining and/or muddy. Then I like the
nubs. I have Grip Kings on both my bikes. I love them. (11.5, normal-
to-slightly-wide width). But one thing I know for sure... pedals are a
personal and subjective and sometimes ride-style-dependent thing. Grip
Kings definitely work well for all the riding I do or expect to do.
But YMMV.

I haven't tried the current set-screw style nubs. They look different
enough that they may work better or worse than the Tioga blunt ones.

2010-10-17 Thread amoll68
Hi Rob,

I have GKs on my porteur/commuter/rain bike. I added the spikes/studs
that Riv sells. Probably a good idea for wet weather. Probably also
depends on the shoes you are using. During the winter, I commute with
some Lowa hiking boots that have a really effective gore-tex liner. My
feet stay very comfortable all winter.
