The rivet comes out pretty easily once you know the trick.

The Riv instructions are good.

[RBW] Re: Fall = fenders

2013-11-09 Thread Tim Gavin
I took my Riv on a 25 mile ride today, and took a break at Little Bohemia
tap in Cedar Rapids. It claims to be the oldest bar & eatery in town.
Lots of kitsch and character, and some very tasty goulash over dumplings.

The owner's finger in the lens is a perfect example of the character. This
whole area was flooded in August 2008, about up to the top of the door. It
reopened at the end of 2010, although not much of the old neighborhood is
left. http://thegazette.com/2010/12/28/little-bohemia-returns/

This bar was featured in a famous painting by Marvin Cone (contemporary of
Grant Wood).

Oh, boy! Thanks, Dan -- exactly what I needed.

Did you have any problem removing the rivet? I tried to figure out how to
remove that thing for, well, way too long when I first installed the fender
(and finally gave up, figuring I was likely to cause more damage to the
fender than could be repaired), and couldn't figure it out. I see Riv tells
you how to do it, but I'm a little skeptical!

Why not take off the fender flap?

I had Sheldon's fender nuts to install Longboards on my 650B wheels (and was
able to get the right size bolts from the hardware store [how in the world is
it possible that they don't COME with bolts???]), but after mounting I realized
it wasn't going to work -- for the front, it moved the fender an inch closer to
the ground. Even attaching the fender to the front of the fork crown and having
38mm tires, I still worry about the bottom of the fender flap hitting something

Nice thing about using a pickup bed as my main bike transport: no need to
remove any wheels, fenders, etc. Just lay it on the side and close the topper.
So I'll probably leave these fenders on for a while.

That said, I still do it (occasional fenderizing and defenderizing): The

mudding the fenders have to be able to come off. That applies to two bikes.

[RBW] Re: Fall = fenders

2013-11-07 Thread Tim Gavin
Jim-

Yes, the bottom bracket is pretty low; Grant's right on that one. I should
measure it some time. I have 170 crank arms and the (quite low profile)
campus pedals scrape rarely when I pedal while leaned way into a turn.
Yes, Tektro R556 brakes have the perfect reach.

But the ability to ride fast and comfortable 650x38B tires and mount
fenders outweighs the occasional pedal scar. I rarely pedal in corners
anyway.

This bike has evolved into a rambler, a light tourer, ace commuter, library
runner, and farmer's market basket. I have a gofast steel racer for when
I'm feeling speedy. The Riv is for riding for the pleasure of riding.
It's versatile, sexy, and fast.

That bike is gorgeous, first red with the cream had tube I've seen. Some one

Tim,

You've obviously converted your Riv from 700c to 650B. How has that worked
for you? Most of the information I've seen, including some from Grant
himself, is that the original Rivendell Road Standards were not good
candidates for a conversion because of the low bottom bracket that Grant
specified for his original Road Standard bikes. What is the length of your
crank arms? Are you using the Tektro R556 brakes?

2013-11-07 Thread Michael Hechmer
Sweet looking bike Tim, although I'm not sure what this thing you call Fall
is. Here in Vt we have had a week of hi winds and low chill factors.

As for 650B, I would recommend going for it. I bought a new-to-me Saluki
with Pari-Motos last Spring and have fallen in love with it. So much so
that I repainted my old Trek 620 and converted it. All you would need is
new wheels (or just rims & spokes) and brakes. You would not regret it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fall = fenders

2013-11-07 Thread Tim Gavin
Thanks for the visual, Christoper. I'm afraid that moving the fender back
may cause the flap to get very close to the ground; these are a bit low
already (650B wheels). I'll give it a try and measure. I can always trim
the flap, or--worst case--buy the shorty flap from Riv.

They move the front fender rearward, but not directly rearward, the main
benefit is you've moved the whole fender back by about 5-10 degrees.

This means your mudflap comes even lower. Let me illustrate:

Bill-

Thanks for the advice. I need to pick up a couple M6 bolts (and a better
method to attach the fender at the chainstay bridge) at the hardware store
and I'll give it a try.

I can see how they would help you get the fender as high as possible.
Unfortunately, that won't let me step up from Lierres to Hetres; the
Hetres don't fit horizontally. I have just about 1.5mm between the tire
sidewalls and the fork legs, chain-, and seatstays. The Riv Road Standard
geometry says it'll fit 700x35C tires, but mine barely fits 700x28C (short
reach brakes), hence the desire for 650B.

Sheldons nuts on bikes with caliper brakes can get the fender just a tiny
bit higher under the brake and fork crown. On the front, you can only get
the fender as high as the slot of that little L-bracket allows. Yes you
have to bend the tip to clear the headset bottom cup, but also you'd have
to dremel it out to get the fender high enough to hit the real limit which
is the brake caliper itself. Run the same fender on the sheldon nut and
you are a couple inches further back (correct) but that also puts you a few
precious mm further UP. So you can run the fender a little bit closer to
the caliper. On the rear, it's a similar thing, to a lesser extent. That
precious couple of mm is useful if you want the 10mm everywhere of
clearance that many recommend. For some that may make the difference
between stopping at Lierres (like I have done), or going all the way to
Hetres. The fender install can also be completely decoupled from the brake
adjustment, by using the Sheldon nut, which just simplifies things a
little.

Bill-

I have some sheldon's fender nuts, but I didn't use them because I didn't
have any bolts that fit them (fenders had one size smaller in hardware). I
understand that they make de-fendering easier (no need to remove brake
caliper, etc), but I don't see how they'll improve fender line. They move
the front fender rearward an inch or two; how does that help? I appreciate
any advice; this was my second ever fender install.

Nice thing about using a pickup bed as my main bike transport: no need to
remove any wheels, fenders, etc. Just lay it on the side and close the
topper. So I'll probably leave these fenders on for a while.

Thanks,

Tim

Many will tell you that a bike that looks that good with fenders should
never be run without fenders. That's a stunner. As you think about your
fenderline tweaks, consider running a pair of Sheldon nuts. For bikes of
that type, I think it might be the smartest route

That said, I still do it (occasional fenderizing and defenderizing): The
trails out my backdoor (Wildcat Canyon) can get muddy, and so for winter
mudding the fenders have to be able to come off. That applies to two
bikes. My roadiest bike sometimes has the fenders off when I'm feeling a
weight-weenie attack, or when I want to run THE FATTEST possible tire.
Finally, I had the chance to throw my Hilsen into my sister's trunk for
free transport to Southern California, so the fenders had to come off. Now
I'll get to ride all Christmas break. Furthermore, I might leave the
Hilsen down there all the way through Strada Rossa!
