I created a wrap-around out of plumbers-tape so that I was able to cut the fender at the brake bridge, and
join the two halves, without running a fender under the brake. I used
it for a couple of years before I upgraded to narrower tires and a
standard fender. During the winter, the brake kept on getting gunked
up and sticky. The normal fender also protects the brake.

So my $0.02 -- just use tires that will fit under a normal fender.

Best,
Larry

Just fyi, the reach around brackets are basically flat rack stays that
are bent in the right places. If you have a vice, stays and some
patience, then you can make your own brackets.

I had RiverCity reach around brackets on a tight-clearance bike. I had
to use p-clamps on the front. See them here:

The brackets worked well. The bike is gone, but I probably still have
the brackets around if you want them.

The owner of River City Bicycles was a co-owner of a chain of shops
based in San Francisco (where I worked in the late 80's early 90's).
The double entendre was completely intentional, I guarantee you
that.

[RBW] Re: Fendering the 'un-fenderable'

2010-06-07 Thread MichaelH

I'm a bit confused by your question. I don't understand where the
pinch point is? Is it between the brake and fender, or between the
tire and the fender? I have had better success with single pull
brakes, which sit a bit higher than modern dual pull and therefore
leave a bit more fender room. Also center pulls leave more fender
room. The new Paul's Racer Ms, are pricey but offer an optimal
combination of clearance and power.

Plastic fenders generally offer a bit more tire clearance than metal
ones. I can only put 28 mm tires under my 43 mm Honjos on m
Rambouillet, and found that my 1984 Trek 620 offered just about the
same clearance.

 Also,
> my bike does not have a fender mounting tab on the rear, and I was

Are you referring to a eyelets at the fork and stays?

Michael
