Just wanted to add my voice of sorrow/disappointment at the discontinuation
of MUSA clothes. It took me too long to finally try them all, so I admit
I wasn't the best patron. But I will say that, since figuring out how
great they were, I've tried MANY times to stock up, only to find no
inventory in my size. If forced, I guess I can live without my pants and
shorts once my existing pairs wear out... *but I don't know how I'll EVER

SEVERAL PAIR OF KNICKERS, AND POSSIBLY SOME PANTS AND SHORTS, TOO. If

2016-02-08 Thread BSWP
I am sad to learn that Riv is holding off on restocking MUSA gear, and
alas, all items in my size are sold out. My thin wool tops and shorts are a
mainstay of my riding. When they eventually wear out, I doubt I'll be able
find similar to replace them with. The fact that the items were made
locally matters a lot to me, as well, they fit and perform to my
satisfaction.

[RBW] Re: Latest Blug, MUSA clothing, and Crapmanship

2016-02-06 Thread Matthew J
The MUSA pants are great for touring and camping. Choose a base layer
depending on the weather, and pull the always comfortable MUSA over. Bonus
that that pack so small and light you can sneak luxuries into the pannier /
back pack you may otherwise leave home.

Probably were too well made for Riv's bottom line. I've had mine for more
than 6 years now. Only noticed Riv had dropped them after a campfire*
mishap burnt a hole in one of my two pair.

Taylor Stitch will be coming out with some pants later this month that
sound similar to MUSA. According to the blurb these will also be made in
the Bay Area. Possibly by the same company that made MUSA? I've got a
pair on pre-order and my fingers crossed.

*When I camp alone I do not have camp fires. Last September my nephew
joined my brother and me on a trip to Glacier. He complained about his
knees when we hiked, watched movies on his iPhone on a perfectly clear
night instead of walking down to Bowman Lake beach to star gaze, and
insisted on building campfires one of which damaged my MUSA pants. Kids
these days!

O my, another choice!

David: how do these Royce Peak pants feel when you are bending over in the
hooks? Do they give you that awful "there's a draft back there" feeling?

One nice thing about the Alittas is that they have an elasticized waist,
but also belt loops.

2016-02-06 Thread Patrick Moore
It's just right from about 45*F down to 30*F if it's not windy, over a Wabi
Woolens LS jersey. The high button neck keeps me from getting sore throats;
with other garments I use a scarf. I recently bought my first real cycling
jacket in years, of midweight fabrick, high collar, etc, but tho' this is
nice in wind, I find that, even below freezing and layered over just one
jersey, I start to sweat after a few miles. The tweed jersey is warm but
breathes and, like other wool, adapts to a far greater range of temps.

I scored the tweed, 4 ss wool jerseys including a very appealing Cycles
Wolfe Bienne retro copy with both rear and *front *pockets and a retro
Raleigh jersey, a pair of wool cycling shorts, and a (too small, alas) pair
of Euro wool cycling tights, for $120 or so from John Stamstadt who was
selling the bunch several years ago.

I must keep an eye on those "Adventure Pants." I also have to keep a rein
on my spending, but the Alitta pants I got at GW t'other day made me think
that perhaps I'd like something a bit heavier than the Rock Bros. Alas, the
Alittas are L, and, after riding in them yesterday and finding it hard
despite the velcro shin strap to keep the right leg off the chain, they'll
go to my bigger little brother, and just perhaps I'll get the REIs or
perhaps the Alittas in Med.

I owned a pair of MUSA knickers and the original pants. I can put up with
no zip fly, but I found the waist cut far too low -- uncomfortable when I
ride on the hoods. But I did like the look - trim but not tight -- and the
fabric weight was just right.

Dear Patrick

That tweed wool jersey was the best clothing item Rivendell ever produced,
and I've owned a fair amount of their stuff. Right weight, machine
washable, good club cut, reasonable arm length for cycling, pockets in
exactly the right spot, button neck. It was not easily improved, and it was
my favorite winter item for a decade.

I should have bought a second one, as I eventually tore a hole in the body
and foolishly sent it to Alex Clarke (Woolistic) to get rewoven. They
misplaced it (along with my DC randonneurs jersey, and a the Ktena black
wool jersey I took to PBP 2011) and flat refused to do anything about it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Latest Blug, MUSA clothing, and Crapmanship

2016-02-06 Thread Patrick Kelly
While I wasn't totally satisfied with the musa knickers I had briefly,
they did convince me that nylon is good for riding pants. For me, I
like REI's "adventure pants"
I have 2 pairs which I alternate almost continuously.

They're a good weight of nylon, maybe not as thick as musa, and well
designed. Actually, REI changes specs sometimes (from year to year, I
think), so some years the weight is not right. When I found that this
years batch was good, I bought my current 2 pairs. (I've "outgrown" my
other pair.) Pretty easy to roll up the cuffs to create that knicker
effect. Grin.

2016-02-06 Thread Garth

For anyone fretting over the clothing not being made anymore, there are
many people , family, friends, professionals, who can replicate your
favorite pants, shorts etc. Good fabric can be bought online, as well as
all the fittings etc.

2016-02-06 Thread WETH
Tony,
Thanks. I still am finishing the Romulus project. Once that's done, I will turn
my focus to then Cheviot. Riv was selling two Cheviot frames last week-one a
50cm and one a 60cm-for $800 because they had arrived with mid seat stays that
were 2mm too inboard on drive side. So they did some grinding and offered at a
discount. I couldn't resist!
I too hope they do a final run of the MUSA pants as I love my one and only pair.
Erl

2016-02-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
I live in MUSA knickers (breeches for you UK lot who are currently
snickering. Grin.) and mine are already several years old and sporting
myriad patches. Sadly, I learned from Riv yesterday that no large
knickers/breeches remain. No one else makes baggy knickers with a
sweatpants waist, but I'll be asking my wife to figure out how.

With abandon,
Patrick

A Cheviot!?! Awesome Erl, congrats. That green looks amazing in pictures,
I can't wait to check it out in person.

I did like his 'crapsmanship' mora knife handle. I've seen where you can
buy the blade only blanks online so that would be a fun project. I won't
miss the knickers. Given how nicely the pants can roll up above your calves
w/ the zippers up I've always felt you can wear them that way if you want
but still have the pants for the (most of the time) that you want them. Of
course there aren't any pants available right now. I am hopeful they follow
through with another run of the moleskin shirts as I missed out on the last
one.
