When people ask "what size tire should I use for a tour?", my advice is "stick on the biggest one your bike will take". You have found the limit for the Roadeo! And what a look. dougP On Oct 29, 4:43 am, [email protected] wrote: > Rodeo with Shwalbe Marathon Supremes 700x40 mounted on Mavic Open Pro rims. > > http://www.flickr.com/photos/d_nawrocki/sets/72157627878179821/ > > Dave Nawrocki > Fort Collins, CO > > > > - Original Message - > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Sent: Thursday, October 27, 2011 2:07:44 PM > Subject: [RBW] Marathon Supremes > > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 6:05:24 AM > Subject: Marathon Supremes > > Last Saturday was work on the bikes day out in the garage. [RBW] Re: Marathon Supremes
I do like those tires on my Sam Hillborne. However, on that bike, thye don't look huge. Or maybe I'm just more used to slightly larger tires. The skinniest I'll ride is 37 and those look positively svelte. Like others, would like to see photos of the Rodeo set up that way. With a suitably light rider, the ride has to be extra plush. Marathon plus is the tire with the real thick inner layer: http://smtp.schwalbetires.com/bike_tires/road_tires/marathon_plus_tour It is designed for people riding in very rugged conditions as one might find in rural Africa or South America. The Supreme is a lighter tire made with a special flat resistant compound: http://smtp.schwalbetires.com/bike_tires/road_tires/marathon_supreme It has less rolling resistance than the plus. > Then I bought my Bombadil with 700x50 Big Apples.. Strangely enough, I find about the same thing with my Sam Hillborne. The 40mm Supremes can be slow and heavy. Although not all the time. While the frame can handle them, I was a bit happier last year on Pasela 35s on my particular SH. Otherwise, I have a set of Supremes 26x2.0 on a different bike and it is quite a good riding experience. Although not quite as cushy as with Big Apples. I'm also running the 40mm Marathon Supremes on my Quickbeam with 50mm Berthoud fenders. I wouldn't have bought them (I'm a big Pasela fan) but they came on my used Quickbeam. I ride though a rough industrial neighborhood on my commute and, picking up nails, screws, glass, etc used to get 3 or 4 flats a month. But I haven't gotten any in the 6 months since I started riding the Supremes. With the 40s I don't have as much fender clearance as I'd prefer. But they definitely fit. [RBW] Re: Marathon Supremes
I second that..I have the 700 x 40's (38mm) and run them at about 65 psi. They seem to ride as nice as my 35mm wide Paselas did only cushier. I also like the reflective strip. For me the 38 mm width seems perfect for all around riding. While probably not as gnarly as the older 700 x 47's I had on before, they seem tough enough. I'd heard they were heavy and slow. But then I tried them (650b) and I think they're just great. Plus I really hate flats. [RBW] Re: Marathon Supremes
MIke: My Atlantis came with Paselas which were good but prone to sidewall cuts due to my lack of attention in where I ride. I changed to the Marathon Supremes a few years back and will soon install my 3rd pair. Expect 4-5k miles on a rear and few if any flats. I run 60 psi and only pump them up once or twice a month. Wonderful tires. Pricey to buy but cost effective on a per mile or per flat basis. You may now forget about tires for a year or two. dougP On Jan 26, 8:43 pm, Mike wrote: > I got out for a 60 mile ride on the Hilsen today.
