I find that interesting, since you're supposed to get a 10% discount at
Motel 6 if you are an Adventure Cycling Association member! Was there a
specific Motel 6 where this happened? It might be good if ACA learned about
that.

[RBW] Re: NAHBS in Sacramento Feb. 26 - 28

2016-02-07 Thread Jim M.

You can get BART at SFO to take you to an Amtrak Station, at which you get
on a Capitol Corridor train to Sacramento.

At SFO BART, take a train heading to Pittsburg/Bay Point or to Richmond,
and get off at the 12th St Oakland station. The Jack London AMTRAK station
is less than a mile walk. The walk is through downtown Oakland, and you can
get coffee/food if you want. Alternatively, take the Richmond-bound BART to
Richmond station. The Richmond Amtrak station is co-located with the BART
station, but there are no services nearby, and the neighborhood is not the
best.

The Amtrak station in Sacramento is less than a mile from the convention
center.

On returning to the Bay Area, you can get off in Martinez, but that would
necessitate a taxi or Uber to Walnut Creek. If you take Amtrak to Richmond,
you can get on BART, and at the MacArthur Station, transfer to
a Pittsburg/Bay Point train (some times labeled Concord). Take that train
to Walnut Creek, and Riv HQ is a short walk. When you're done with the test
ride, you can go back to BART and take an SFO-bound train back to the
airport.

If you have any questions, let me know.

2016-02-06 Thread Eric Norris
Unfortunately, light rail is still years away from going to the airport. Your
best bet would be a taxi or Uber to get downtown … and once you get there, the
transit choices are going to be far less that what you’re used to in Toronto.
You’ll need to walk a lot or check the bus schedules to get around town.

Getting from Sacramento to SF is easier. You can take Amtrak from the downtown
station to Richmond and connect with BART, which goes right into downtown San
Francisco (where you’ll find more familiar transit options). There’s a BART
stop fairly close to Rivendell—check their system maps and timetables online.

Well I think I lied above, I have decided that I am going to NAHBS after
all but I need a little help with logistics.

I will be flying to San Fransisco on the Friday and making my way to
Sacramento and I was thinking the cheapest way would be to take the train
system from the airport. Can anyone give me any information to make my trip
easier? I know absolutely nothing about the transit systems in California.

I will leave Sacramento after the bike show on Sunday and make my way back
to SF or area as I would love to go to Riv HQ and test ride the A. Homer
Hilsen on the Monday. Then fly back to Toronto on that day or the next.

Thanks in advance for any help in navigating that portion of my trip.

2016-02-04 Thread blakcloud
I went in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014 and there has been a shift in the show
every time I go and this shift is not something I like. It started with a
show for hand built bikes but now has become a lot more corporate. You see
less frame builders and more corporations, like Shimano, Campagnolo, Gates
Drive Systems, SRAM, Chris King and Rtichey. This is the stuff you can see
anywhere. It is the frame builders that make the show and they are
dwindling over the years.

After 2014 I decided it's not worth it for me to fly from Toronto to the
host city, get a hotel for three or four days and see less and less frame
builders. Now if it was in my backyard, then there would be no doubt I
would go.

I will be fine looking at everyone's photos.
