dead calm, dry as a bone, high pressure.

2015-03-06 Thread ascpgh
-3°F here this morning, 4" of new snow on top of all the frozen moisture
from a day's rainfall.

Weirdest things happen in these big temp swings.

On my 43° rainy ride home the other evening, after low single digit temp
ride to work, I ran over an expansion joint that grew over the last two
days and a rattle on my bike commenced. When I reached a place with light
and cover I saw that it was my fender stay popped out of the right dropout
clamp despite blue Loctite. I snugged it with my trusty 4mm and checked the
others which also took an average of a quarter turn too.

Might tempt fate and switch to normal tires for Saturday and Sunday.

About 4 inches in the Columbia MD area now. I hear it's going down to 2F

Been too cold to wrench in the garage.
I'll be glad when the warmer weather comes and I can wrench and ride again.
Conditions here have been bad for the last three weeks for riding.
I don't know how the people up north have been surviving! Over 100 inches this

after a December week on the north slope, when I got back to muggy
Anchorage, it was 25 and I was sweating in a sweater - but we're used to
rides in the 50s and 60s and they call that winter. What's wonderful is
when we get what we call a blue norther - cold high pressure turns the sky
dark blue, no humidity and those 40-degree mornings are cycling heaven.

Just to get a look of disgruntlement from Ron, we're sunny, 28˚F, 100%

for my ride this morning. Grin. Grit, grime, snow, slush and ice is good

At this point I'd kill for a relatively dry day forecast above 40. As of now it
looks like I'll be sporting a noodly pair of legs (at best) come the start of
spring here in NYC.

Bey hey -- we can't complain about the skiing, at least!

There is Summer, Summer fall-ing asleep, Summer sleeping and Summer

Micheal I feel your pain.We had 10 days in February over 60' which was
great.But lately it's been 30-35' below average.Denver has broken a record
for snow in February recorded in 1912.Although we haven't gotten snow like
Boston or east coast, we have been spoiled the past few years. Some of the
ski slopes are getting 2-4 ft this weekend which is good for the reservoirs
this spring and of course the skiers.
Hang in there..spring is just around the corner... we'll be mowing the
grass sooner than we like.

Michael,

Your Vermont problem is the same over here in the "southwest" (Pittsburgh).
Average February temp. this year was 18.5°F, second to 1979 when it was
18.0°F.

I will take -12°F over 35° and raining any day though, and I think I'll
have the chance to compare soon. 33° and snowing now. Shoveled the wet
stuff off the walks and driveway twice already. Funny things happen when it
get s this cold, when the DPW switches to calcium chloride the road can
have wetness on it but the process of spraying off your tires must reduce
the ionization and the it starts to freeze onto everything. My front fender
mudflap has been mighty in preventing subsequent frozen slush mechanical
failures this winter.
