I've got close to 1,000 miles on my (new) Brooks B 17 Select. It has darkened to a nice honey color now. But it has never stained my clothes, not even my white shorts. I have put two light applications of Proofide on, with no ill effects. Very comfortable saddle. I love it! -- You

There is no consistent frequency for leather treatment, since the condition of the leather depends on so many variables. The foremost consideration is probably how often you ride your bike, but also whether your bike spends a lot of time outdoors, climate, etc. I think the best policy is

After having read way too many posts, on various forums, about Brooks saddle care, I think the consensus is this: Whether you use Proofide or Obenauf's or neutral Kiwi shoe polish or some other treatment, use it sparingly and not too frequently. How much is sparingly? I like Grant's suggestion
