I believe the "Riv Rally," refers to this list, the Riv list, since it was
organized for and by list members. I can't imagine anyone being turned
away for lack of a particular brand of bike...

Clearly "Riv" is an attitude as much as a brand. That is all that you are
"required" to bring to a Riv ride!

Great job Bobby (and all the other riv-ish ride planners elsewhere)!

Just from chatting with the participants, I believe everyone on RRE 2012 could
have ridden a perfectly suitable and very appealing non-Riv bike. Maybe we

Thanks, it's all good. As long as I continue to be involved, Riv Rally will
always be Riv Rally (I promise), and it will remain open TO ALL who embrace the
Riv philosophy, REGARDLESS of whether you own a Riv or some other bike. In
fact, at the next rally I plan to ride either my '85 Stumpy, my 86 Cimarron or
my 80-something Mongoose. I'm lucky to own some pretty awesome Non-RIV bikes,
but I CAN tell you (with no hesitation) that RBW has had a profound impact on
how I built up these bikes as well as fueling my passion for the bicycling
lifestyle, in general. I suspect this is probably true of many Riv owners.

Also for the commonality which can come from mutual appreciation of
cycling that Rivendell promotes among individuals.

Looking around now for a more conditions-capable ride than my current
"great pumpkin" (but not a replacement) lead me to seek input on 650b
wheel size benefits, they look like you can ride a wider tire with
less angular acceleration burdens than a 700c/29er. Looking over the
650b Kogswell and Atlantis on RRE '12 planted that seed. An e-mail
with Grant following several days of reading cleared this up by me
opinion; it answers no problems for me. Any frame I fit can be chosen
for clearance to run as wide a tire as I deem necessary.

That certainly clears the field somewhat.

I think the Riv Rally is a fantastic idea, and I'm amazed at Bobby's ability to
bring an idea like that to fruition. I associate it in my mind with classic
auto rallies, like the Austin Healey rally that came through my town a few
years ago, or the dozens of MGs I saw on my drive down the East side of the
Sierras last Summer. As an outsider, I thought that was cool. I talked to one
guy on the AH rally who was driving something else, but he came out to see his
friends and the countryside. I used to be into hearses, and the Professional
Car Socieuses would put on rallies and meets. I didn't consider it pretentious
- it was a way to meet people you only knew online, check out their amazing
stuff, and do something together.
I won't apologize for making auto connections in a bike forum, since I think
it's a valid comparison. We are into something that's outside the mainstream,
and we have every right to celebrate it and enjoy it, come together and share
it.
I got great vicarious pleasure out of both the past Riv Rallies, and hope they
continue.

Bobby,

Thanks again for putting this Riv Rally East ver. 2012 together. I'm glad
the weather held off, and that you all got to see one of my favorite
sections of the GAP. Ed and I were sorry to have missed this years ride,
but have read the posts and viewed the great pics that have been posted.
Ed liked the new blue version of his Surly LHT that was there, and I was
admiring all the different Rivs in attendance.

Like minded, friendly folks, enjoying a great ride. What could be wrong
with that! Can't wait to hear about next years plans.

Cheers,

Rusty (Pittsburgh)

riv and riv style build bikes are much less expensive. Compare a Sam to a

I will give you the benefit of the doubt that there was nothing implied, but i
think you're reading into the title too much. This is a Rivendell Owners
Group, but there is no requirement that you have to own or ride a Rivendell.
In the same way it was a Riv Rally because we organized it through the list,
but never at any point did anyone say you needed to have a Riv to ride. We
could have called it the GAP 12 ride, but that doesn't capture how we all
met--which is through the Riv owners group.

As Steve points out, by nature of the ride Rivs were the natural type of bike,
but other bikes showed up, and the over-riding commonality was that they were
all built up in a similiar way (because the route/nature of the ride required
that), but no-one said anything about the non-riv bikes. In fact i found it
interesting to see a Surly built up or a Kogswell (which are not made anymore
so it's rare for me to see one). After the first 20 minutes of ogling and
looking over the bikes i think everyone just rode and focused on getting to
know everyone. The bikes just 'broke the ice' for all of us to meet.

I just didn't like the idea that on a "Riv Rally" someone might feel having a
fancy bike is necessary to come along with the group.

I suppose "pretension" was the wrong way to put it. Truly sorry.

[RBW] Re: Riv Rally East Miraculously Escapes Weather Debacle!

2012-04-28 Thread ascpgh
I can't think of anything more "pretentious" than a group of riders
dressed and outfitted alike for a club ride on a Tuesday evening;
carbon fiber this or that, twelve spoke wheels, alien-looking
cranksets, garish graphics and matching team kit Lycra.

Funny how a make developed from utility and the material of choice
being one least destructive to the environment and beneficial in
qualities in use would be accused of being the opposite of
egalitarian. Reminds me of the writer wondering about all the carbon
fiber bikes in Manhattan. I am amused that my bike, held together with
brazed lugs and with the vertical tubes a different color than the
others equates pretense. In the face of all of the aerospace
technology CF rigs sporting garish graphics and component sets more
expensive than my first three cars I don't see it that way.

But what do I know is that I was there, carried all my needs for a
couple days on my bike with temps between 81 and 32, sunny skies to
overcast and rain. Pretense to be prepared? That wasn't my first bike
ride and all I came with was a product of past, or egalitarian
experiences. But then that collected experience gives me the knowledge
and respect not to walk into a biker bar and berate Harley Davidsons
for being playtoys of the affluent. An opinion which discretion ought
to curb one from voicing, no matter what you chose to ride in on,
until you are not likely to offend the collected group who share a
different one.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East Miraculously Escapes Weather Debacle!

2012-04-28 Thread Minh
I will give you the benefit of the doubt that there was nothing implied,
but i think you're reading into the title too much. This is a Rivendell
Owners Group, but there is no requirement that you have to own or ride a
Rivendell. In the same way it was a Riv Rally because we organized it
through the list, but never at any point did anyone say you needed to have
a Riv to ride. We could have called it the GAP 12 ride, but that doesn't
capture how we all met--which is through the Riv owners group.

As Steve points out, by nature of the ride Rivs were the natural type of
bike, but other bikes showed up, and the over-riding commonality was that
they were all built up in a similiar way (because the route/nature of the
ride required that), but no-one said anything about the non-riv bikes. In
fact i found it interesting to see a Surly built up or a Kogswell (which
are not made anymore so it's rare for me to see one). After the first 20
minutes of ogling and looking over the bikes i think everyone just rode and
focused on getting to know everyone. The bikes just 'broke the ice' for
all of us to meet.

We were indeed inclusive. Last year there were in addition to several
Rivendells, a Trek and a Gunnar. This year in addition to several
Rivendells there were a Surly and a Kogswell. Any "exclusivity" is
strictly in your perception, not in reality.

The rally was open to all on this list, and no requirements for bikes
have ever been posted, except for the obvious needs that if you're going
to be riding on gravel you need a bike suitable for doing so, and if
you're going to be carrying gear for an overnight you need a bike
suitable for that.

> I suppose "pretension" was the wrong way to put it. Truly sorry.

There is indeed a whole lot to like about the Great Allegheny Passage,
and especially about the towns it goes through. The Greenbrier River
Trail in West Virginia is similar, although not nearly as long and the
top 1/2 inch of surface is a lot looser, but there are few towns along
the way; and the one I stayed at (famous for the "Roadkill Cookoff") is
sorely deficient in terms of food compared to the likes of Confluence,
which has both top notch pizza and the justly famous Three Sisters.

There are about ten Riv owners in my club and sometimes it's all Rivs on a
ride. No problem, ride whatever you want.
I just didn't like the idea that on a "Riv Rally" someone might feel having

[RBW] Re: Riv Rally East Miraculously Escapes Weather Debacle!

2012-04-27 Thread Michael Hechmer
I think it's great having Riv Rally East. Unfortunately, I already have
three weekends committed in the late March & early April time frame, so
does my wife. We have been unable to attend either year. It would be
easier if this event were a little later, like the first weekend in May, or
maybe the weekend after Mothers Day. It all makes me dream of holding a NE
Riv Rally, here in northern VT.

BTW, This isn't so much a recovery support group as it is an addicts club.

I'm going to have to make some steady progress on the house renovation

I think I caught something after being out in all the cold and in the
wilderness last weekend.

I'm feeling like I need more clearance for bigger tires, more braze-
ons, a kick stand plate, and a generator hub/light set up. The
symptoms of my illness seems to have come back after ten years
remission.

Sometimes even 16:9 just doesn't show it the way I see it. Both Hugin &

Done.

Speaking of the snow, John Philip sent me an email at 1:30 AM this morning...
he had just arrived home in Syracuse after a long and grueling day. When he
and Tom Nezovich awoke in Rockwood, there was some 6+ inches of wet, heavy snow
on the ground. They slogged through up to a foot of snow (in places) to the
Divide, after which things started to improve... (like having gravity in their
favor, but also the snow began to thin out). But it was still in the low 30s
with sleet, rain and high winds, mostly from the NW (fortunately at their
backs)...

Wow...Kudos to John and Tom for toughing it out.

MEANWHILE (and sorry I FORGOT to mention), MARC IRWIN CAMPED OUT in Ohiopyle
overnight... I'm looking to hear back from him as to how he fared... (but then
again, he's from Michigan, and an experienced Boy Scout.. this to him was
probably little more than a Spring squall).

Peace,
BB

None of us had milkshakes. Many of us got hoagies there, but we were in
a huge hurry to get back to the shuttle site (rafting place over the
bridge), didn't want to miss the ride to Fallingwater, and ate there.

All those beautiful bikes look really good overlooking the falls.

like you were having a great time, very inspirational, can't wait to get
back on the bike.
