Not the best Ebay listing in terms of photos or descriptions, but
it got my attention as I had just been turned down for a custom from
 Riv,
and this one looked pretty much like the one I would have had them
 build. I
owned another similar 700c All Rounder a while back, and regretted
 selling
it. The price was kind of high for me at the time. I asked the seller
 a
couple questions that went unanswered, so I left it be until I
 recently got
an offer with a BIG reduction in price.

Long story short it arrived today, and it exceeded all my
 expectations.

It's nearly indistinguishable from NOS! Happily it is a genuine
Mark Nobilette build from 2014. 62cm. 700c wheels. Joe Bell paint
 dated
5/9/14 on the steering column. The packing was the best I've ever
 seen.
 This thing is flawless!

I had a set of wheels with 2" Big Ben's handy, so I dropped them in
as a test. MORE than enough room, and I could go much fatter.

It's going to be a joy building this up. I have just about
 everything I need already.
I was bummed when Riv told me they were not doing customs anymore.
This makes up for it. More pics to come...

 Marty

 Hope the offer was good.

It had sat for a while at the asking price.

 Looks absolutely amazing tho!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Custom - All Rounder Style

2025-02-11 Thread Ryan
Nice! Since you couldn't get a custom, I'm glad the seller dropped the
price and your patience was rewarded. Can't wait to see it all built up!
Good luck with your headset search...although, those RH headsets, I'm sure,
are money well-spent.

I do like those classic Rivs and Mark Nobilette sure does beautiful work

[RBW] Re: "Rivendell Custom"

2024-09-17 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
I was ready to spring for a custom a couple month ago, and reached out to
get started. I was informed they were no longer building customs, so I came
up with a plan B and found a bike similar to what I would have had built -
an early Davidson touring bike that checked all the boxes: lugged steel,
level top tube, cantilever brakes, room for 35mm tires (maybe 38?) and a
generous assortment of braze-ons. If I ever am in the position (or mood) to
go custom again, I would consider Davidson a top contender.

[RBW] Re: "Rivendell Custom"

2024-09-16 Thread Corwin Zechar
I was aware that Grant was scaling back on customs when I asked if I could
get a replacement frame. I do consider myself lucky to be able to get
something to replace the custom I lost. I'm not sure the tap is actually
"turned off". I have seen several customs mentioned in the weekly email
newsletter from Will. And I know they are keeping Mark Nobilette very busy.

I think you are much more likely to get a custom if you are looking for an
upright bike instead of a bike requiring a more "aero" riding position.
Most of the customs I have seen come through were upright, versus my bike
with the [Albastache] bars slammed.

the fidelity to the sizing and riding of the person the frame was designed
for. I paid $2700 for my first custom about fifteen years ago (stolen April
2021). Paid more than $5K (Nobilette did some lug carving) for it's
replacement earlier this year.

I've got no personal problem if someone wants to sell their bike frame, but
I find it an odd marketing strategy to publish poorly lit photos and a very
limited description while asking close to what a new custom frame would
cost. Good luck to them.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Custom FS

2020-11-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
I emailed the OP off-list, but haven't gotten a response.

In that email, I recommended to the OP that he could easily sell the Nitto
27F front rack separately, since pretty much any 700C Rivendell could use
that rack and that rack is excellent. I offered $200 shipped for the rack
+ basket + net. I've got the bike waiting for it. If one of you buys his
frameset and wants to turn around and sell the rack assembly to me, let me
know.

Could it be the same background that was behind my

What model is the Riv? I'm interested but need more details, particularly
standover height and some sense of what the widest tire I can fit on the
bike is. If you aren't sure, I'll contact Rivendell with model info myself
and ask.

Thanks

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Custom

2010-09-14 Thread Ryan
That's a beauty. I'd have a tough time waiting another year to build
it up.

Of course, for such a frame, components should be carefully
considered:) How are you going to build it up?

Not bad turnaround time, considering that only Mark Nobilette
building for Rivendell, and he has his RH gig , too. I ordered my
Rivendell road frame in Aug 2000 and received it around the middle of
October 2001 when
Curt Goodrich and Joe Starck were building the customs; mine was built
by Curt Goodrich. I think it was in the paint queue for about 6 weeks
or so. Good thing about the wait , though, is that the bike was
actually paid for (not lurking on my credit card) by the time I
received it.

Enjoy your new bike!

Regards, Ryan

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Custom

2010-09-14 Thread Jeff
It took a little over a year for the frame to be built (which was
fine-- I needed that time to pay it off!) Then there was the wait on
the paint which was longer than I expected, but you don't rush
perfection. All told, about 15 months from when I placed the order.
That's not a very long wait when you already have a great bike to
ride.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Custom

2010-09-14 Thread Jeff
That's right. As I said about a year ago on the topic, I used to
think I wanted a Herse. In the process of getting my girlfriend a
Bleriot and reading through my run of the RR, I fell in love with
Rivendell. Once I discovered that Nobilette was building the customs,
it seemed I could have a sort of RH by way of RBW. Now obviously
Nobillette builds RH's to different specs than Grants, but I'm sure
I'll be more than satisfied with this frame.

The only thing holding me back from building it up sooner is having to
save up to go to France. Maybe I can manage to do both. Already,
Jan's question is turning over in my mind: will it "plane?"

Jeff,
That looks great! Good luck holding out on that build.
My custom is at Joe Bell's shop right now so it shouldn't be too much
longer for me.
 Have fun,
