I think installing metal fenders used to be a lot more involved a few
years back as they didn't come pre-drilled for the stays. I've
installed Berthouds and SKS fenders multiple times and have no
problems with either. If I'm riding off road I actually prefer the SKS
because they are shorter. I live in Portland, commute by bike
literally everyday and have no problems or complaints about the SKS
fenders on my commuter. All that said... the metal fenders do look
nicer. My rando bike has VO aluminum fenders and they look nice,
provide great coverage and seem to be made well enough. The person
that built the frame actually installed the fenders for me and made
some changes to them (using two eyebolts on the rear fender as opposed
to one) and added a custom front leather flap that is installed in a
trick way I don't know how to describe.

I actually have a pair of SKS/Berthoud fenders laying around that I
purchased from Peter White. I guess they don't make them anymore. I'll
probably install them on one of my bikes this fall. I'm kind of
surprised this model wasn't more widely available.

I found the metal fenders (VO ones) were in fact harder to install
then the SKS ones but i'm not that patient, i think the metal ones
require a lot more test fitting. In the overall scheme it's not a big
difference in time.

I think the SKS ones have their place though, i think the metal ones
are a bit over-kill for a fast-ish road bike like a roadeo or
ramboulliet.

[RBW] Re: SKS Fenders have their place in my world

2011-06-06 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Am I alone in having the experience that metal fenders were *easier*
to install than the SKS fenders? Not way more easy, but definitely
easier. If for no other reason than having fewer things connecting the
dropout to the fender. And I certainly do like the extra length.
Admittedly, the real reason I actually tried them at all... the ones I
got are a better fit than any of the SKS fenders I've used and were
about 2/3 the price of SKS fenders at the time.

I had some concern about not having the quick-release mechanism. But
when I was using the SKS fenders, I only tripped that quick-release
once; I walked the bike off a curb carelessly. I recognize the
possibility of having the problem the quick-release solves. But
obviously it's not like people have been flung off their bikes on a
regular basis when using metal fenders. So... you pays your money, you
takes your pick.

And the metal fenders shore are purty!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

Actually, metals are pretty darn durable, and strangely the better (=
Honjo) aluminums seem more dent resistant than the Berthoud stainless
type. I've used metals (B Stainless and H Alum) on commuters,
including bus racks and back-of-vans and they hold up very well.

[RBW] Re: SKS Fenders have their place in my world

2011-06-06 Thread Mike
I don't mind SKS fenders so much but they're a bummer if you're riding
with others as they're too short to keep spray off of people riding
directly in front and behind you. The issue of rear spray can be
resolved with a flap but there is still a bit of spray that will shoot
forward. Next winter I may try the SKS longboard fenders although both
pairs of P45s that I have seem to be holding up well enough.
