[RBW] Re: Sayonara Jay Day

2012-01-16 Thread Adam
I too have had the pleasure to get to know Jay and will miss him a
great deal.

Not to make this a blush fest for Jay but I want to second (or third
or fourth) the recognition of his honesty and integrity of character.

Not only can that man ride, but he's pretty great at this whole living
life thing too.

He will be missed for sure, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for a bay
area return in the coming years.

Best wishes Jay!

Jay is also a superhero, but I won't divulge his special powers.

Really, one of the best people I know.

[RBW] Re: Sayonara Jay Day

2012-01-16 Thread Stephen
I spent some time in the Walnut Creek area while biking down the coast
a few winters ago. I met Jay at the Riv head quarters, where we
talked while working on my bike. We hit it off in the way that most
people that meet him seem to hit it off. Later we went for a ride
around Berkeley, stopped at the grocery, then went back to his place
where he cooked me dinner and talked late into the night. Cooked me
dinner!

For me, it was such a gracious act of hospitality, and for him it
seemed second nature. Truly the highlight of that trip. I'm happy
for anyone who gets to know him.

[RBW] Re: Sayonara Jay Day

2012-01-16 Thread Beth H
When Sweetie and I visited Riv HQ during a Bay Area swing a couple of
summers ago, we "kidnapped" Grant for a lovely "power lunch" around
the corner that lasted nearly two hours.
When we returned Grant to his environment obviously more relaxed, he
settled down on his giant feldenkreis ball-cum-office chair, and got
back to work with a smile. As Sweetie and I looked around the showroom
for a quick peek and some possible shopping, Jay came up to me, smiled
gently and whispered, "thank you SO much for getting him out of here
for a couple of hours!"
"Is there a problem?" I asked, sotto voce.
"No, no, no problem," Jay assured me, "it's just that Grant eats lunch
at his desk a lot. He takes really short breaks. Works a lot." He
paused, snuck a glance at Grant and whispered to me, "Now and then he
forgets to eat altogether. It's really busy around here in the summer,
you know."
That's the kind of fella Jay appeared to be in our brief encounter.
Caring and sweet in a quiet sort of way.
I wish him all the best in sunny, funny Arizona.

[RBW] Re: Sayonara Jay Day

2012-01-15 Thread Amit Singh
Jay is one of the best people I've met and worked with. He's
incredibly patient, laughs easy, eats and drinks great stuff and
doesn't cover up truth to make others happy. He also bends over
backwards to make others happy. He's become a great friend, someone I
can talk El Rego Et Ses Commandos with.

I remember talking with Jay when I first called saying something like
I can't believe people spend the kinda loot they do on bikes and bike
related stuff. It blew my mind, I thought I was above it, talking to a
man that was in it. Looking back, what a stupid and jerk thing to say,
Jay was gracious through it all.

Jay rode with me to make sure I made it home safe after a night at the
bar while I was visiting California last month. Normally I walked, but
he rode up the toughest hill in Berkely, maybe the toughest hill I
rode the whole time I was there, and insisted on riding up, not
walking up, and taught me how to snake side to side to make sure I
didn't put a foot on the ground. We were both sweating bullets of
liquor by the time we reached the top. He was laughing the whole time,
I was hyperventilating. And then he rode off into the night like a
cowboy. He makes art when he rides. It's a beautiful thing to see.

I like him a lot. Riv's losing one of the best, ever.

Good luck homie, wherever you go, whatever you do I hope you 'git it!'
with passion, love and happiness.

I'm annoyed that this sounds like such a dramatic goodbye message.
I'll text you as I'm throwing back a drink to celebrate your upcoming
journey.

Agreed. I never really knew Jay as a personally. My visits to the shop
always consisted small talks with Jay. Sometimes on a rare occasion, I
would catch him around Berkeley and we would exchange cycling nods. I
was always star-struck whenever I saw him. The pictures on the site
and his videos made him seem like some type of superman for Rivendell.
Sad to see him go. Glad he's going for a good reason. Cheers to Jay
