[RBW] Re: Wee Rides are Awesome Rides!

2015-07-06 Thread Daniel D.

Went for a wet foggy san francisco summer morning wee ride. Got up at 5am
hit the donut shop for fresh maple crullers then head up San Bruno Mt. for
coffee and donuts at the top. Mid-climb realized I forgot to visit the
library drop and have a pannier full of books . Was hoping the top
would be above the clouds, no dice. Still pretty nice way to start the
morning with some solitude and nature in a crowded city. ~10 miles ~1300ft
climbing

"IMO, the best riding is turning errand rides into longer detours."

One of my touring buds treats every errand as an opportunity for
adventure. If needs a part from the hardware store, for instance, he'll
ride 10 miles instead of walk around the corner. He delights in hooking up
his trailer for a run to the big box warehouse for bulky items on special
sales. He lures people onto S24Os by offering to carry their gear if they
don't have racks or luggage, and always loads up the trailer with firewood
for these events.

IMO, the best riding is turning errand rides into longer detours. Fri: 21
mile gofast out and back on the dead flat Rio Grande bike path (17.03 and
17.76 mph averages, clock running including several brief stops on both
legs). Saturday: 19.23 miles on the Fargo, getting lost in some sandy
doubletrack and newly discovered McMansion territory on the way back from
what was planned to be a 12 mile rt to a nearby grocery store. Today, 16.XX
miles rt to and from church.

Aside: humid today -- 75+% or so and ~ 77F outbound at 9:20 am; ~ 30%s and
low 90s return. The WoolyWarm is not as comfortable when the humidity gets
above the natural ~15% cutoff. I daresay that plastic jerseys are better in
90F high humidity, given the stink. But for our typical 95F sub 20% (sub
10% is common in the afternoons), wool is the cat's pyjamas.

[RBW] Re: Wee Rides are Awesome Rides!

2015-07-05 Thread Beth H
It's true. No ride is too small.

I used to avoid too-short rides. The cyclometer on my fork would stare at
me, gently mocking me if my rides lasted less than five miles.
Then, I decided it was time to tear down my All-Rounder for a long-overdue
overhaul. To serve me in the meantime, I rebuilt my Bridgestone MB-4 as a
city bike, with upright bars, racks and fenders. And no cyclometer. I
decided to try NOT thinking about distance.

That was over a week ago. And after the first couple of rides, I stopped
caring about distance. And two things happened:

1. I spent more time riding (albeit at a slightly slower pace).
2. I enjoyed my rides more.

I'll be tossing up a bunch of Huret cyclometers on eBay soon. But first,
another ride before it gets too hot out there.
Happy riding!

Deacon, you must be an animal to ride a SS in that terrain! Here in Vt I
can't go out the door without hitting a 10% grade and most rides will have
at least a 14% ramp somewhere along the way. I wouldn't dream of riding
without at least a 30/26 gear on an unloaded bike.

Years ago I recall reading an article entitled "In Praise of the Short
Ride" or similar. It was a counterpoint to the notion that one had to
pound out some serious miles to benefit from cycling. Even a single digit
ride can be refreshing, invigorating and generally head clearing. Just
riding is worth just doing.
