[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for gloves below 35 degrees F?

2013-12-18 Thread ascpgh
I'm using mitts from Outdoor Research (
http://www.outdoorresearch.com/en/accessories/gloves/mens-adrenaline-mitts-1.html
.

I thought I'd have to use liners, but inside the compartment my individual
fingers are benefitted by the others' presence in the same enclosed and
warmed air. If I had these in 1978, perhaps my fingers wouldn't have
frostbitten and subsequently become so touchy about immersion and cold.

I'm hoping to see 35 again some time. Minus 18 yesterday morning; a balmy

2013-12-12 Thread C.J. Filip
I've had good luck with wool, full-finger, glove liners under wool mittens.
The mittens have a flap that exposes the fingers. Cheap and effective but
a little drafty when temps dip below 15F.

Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for gloves below 35 degrees F?

2013-12-12 Thread Patrick Moore
The reviews are favorable; this, for instance:
http://lovelybike.blogspot.com/2012/01/grippy-and-wooly-my-favourite-style-of.html

I hear they run big. If I want a pair to, at times, fit into a slightly
oversized outer glove, should I go a size smaller than with other gloves?
(I am a small medium and generally buy gloves L in order to fit smaller
gloves inside.)

I see that the touch-screen-compatible model is not wool. Am I right in
believing that it is the wool models that are the warmest?

+1 on the Defeet gloves. I picked up a pair in a bargain bin somewhere, and
they've become my go-to gloves for temps into the low 30s. Because they're
wool, they also work better in damp or wet conditions than my other gloves.

This just in: the S Tr Post plastic fuzz-lined gloves arrived today. Quite
nice, but they run at least a size small. Back they go.

Will look at large leather work gloves as uber-gloves.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for gloves below 35 degrees F?

2013-12-11 Thread Liesl
Hi Patrick,

For cold weather, for me, mittens over gloves every time unless you're
driving a car. The only trouble I have biking with mittens is wedging my
wool/leather choppers between the bar and cables on the
forward-of-the-grips position on the Boscoes, and that is just not a big
deal.  And I'm with Deacon Patrick on the value of army surplus wool mitts;
one of my fav pairs is double wool with a wool palm and thumb. great by
itself at about 25 to 40 depending on conditions.

Chances are you're fine for down there in ABQ with glove layers. I reserve
the mittens for below 5-10 degrees. In case it helps, my hands get colder
on the bike than they do when I am running in the exact same conditions (as
in I bike to the trail head, run, bike back). My hands need more warmth on
the bike, I presume due to constriction from grip.

The danger with canvas at your likely temps is if it is wet snow, then the
canvas will absorb moisture and you are worse off with them on. You may be
better with a leather outer glove (what I do for gloves).

With abandon,
Patrick

You cold-land-ers: how would wool gloves inside canvas gloves compare to
wool mittens inside canvas mittens? Any idea? I find mittens rather
cumbersome (even though I generally don't have shift levers to mess with).

Today: Sugoi med weight cycling gloves (very nice 'cuz they have a velcro'd
wrist closure that allows you to get them on over liners and also makes
them so much easier to get on than the similar but elastic-cuffed P Izumis
I also have) inside cheap Polartec gloves. But it was about 35F and there
wan't no wind. I daresay that the Polartecs under bigger leather gloves
would be even better -- have some cheap (Sierra TP) leather dress gloves en
route.

Oh: I have small-to-med hands, buy Large cycling gloves for extra finger

2013-11-25 Thread ascpgh
My fingers get cold fast so at 35°, depending on wind and precipitation,
I'm heading to mitts. My all-around favorites are a pair from Outdoor
Research that I find useful beyond their apparent insulation. When really
cold, <20°F, the pair I wear is an original PI Lobster claw, the really
puffed insulation ones with a higher gauntlet than the subsequent ones.
Nice, roomy, well insulated loft on the backs, articulated construction so
I don't waste energy closing my hands against "built flat" construction
just to lightly touch the bars and thin but effective insulation on the
palm side.

Overkill perhaps, but fingers frostbitten once in my youth always let me
know to do better.

x2 on Lobster gloves. I have an old pair (bought at REI around 1995) and
usually wear them whenever the temp is below 45 F. The coldest was during a
commute last winter, temps were in the mid-20s and they still worked pretty
well.

Gets pretty cold up here, with wind chill just in the last week it was -28
Celsius (minus 18F) on my six mile snow laden commute to work, I have some
mitts very similar to these
http://outdoorjay.blogspot.ca/2013/02/mec-logan-mitts-review.html with
removable fleece inners and the leather outers. I sometimes have to bunch
my thumb and fingers together inside the mitts until I get a bit warmed up,
but these mitts have been amazing for warmth. I would think any high
quality ski mitts would work well. I have the inline/interrupter levers
and 46cm Noodle bars and find that it's easy to brake with the
interrupters/mitts combo, but the drop levers are more of a challenge with
mitts on.

The low pressure system that brought us an early winter has thankfully
passed through and we're back into 0 degree (32F) weather give or take for
a few days. The studded tires won't e off until April, probably. A long
winter ahead.

I dunno, they're just heavily lined gloves with long extensions that keep
wind from blowing up your sleeve. I didn't even buy them...got them as a
trade for gloves lost, at the ferry lost & found.

Not bike-specific gloves. I don't think winter gloves have to be bike
specific...at least not for utility riding.

I've got a pair of ski mittens if it gets super cold. Bought 'em in
Vermont years ago.
