A little late but be cautious of ordering from Atomic 22. Read this thread

on another forum before you do.

2016-03-20 Thread islaysteve
I also supported the Hexlox kickstarter and ordered the saddle protection
package. Thanks to Patrick Kelly and Will for posting these two
interesting new security devices. I have VO security skewers on my
Bleriot, but it's rather laughably easy for anyone to get hold of the
security hex wrenches to defeat those (as another poster has shown us).
With all due respect to the Pitlock pitstopper product, it can also
apparently be defeated with a common bolt. I don't assume that bike
thieves are stupid or ignorant. I like the idea of a coded key for the
hexlox. The main downside I can see with the hexlox is that those things
must be awfully small and it seems like it would be very easy to loose
them. I realize that they are magnetic. I hope that the company launch is
successful and that the product becomes available in the US without having
to be shipped from GB. If I like the initial samples, I may order the
skewers. Cheers,
Steve

Well, I haven't actually ordered the security bolts like I said I was
planning to. But I did jump in on an interesting kickstarter:

Probably should have just ordered the security bolts, but I'm a sucker

Re: [RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-03-18 Thread Jack B
The Hexlox looks promising, I might back that.

I ordered a few of the security bolts and found that it was easy to
mis-measure. I ended up with quite a few wrong lengths... seatpost clamp
was especially tricky to get right. Hexlox would solve that problem – All
you need to know is the allen bolt size.

2016-02-20 Thread Tony
Thanks for the tip about the upgrade available for the Allen wrenches. I
bought the Security Bolts a couple of years ago, but gave up due to the
poor quality tool that came with the bolts. My Riv has been fine here in
the suburbs so far with a tether cable through the saddle, but I recently
had my Specialized saddle/seat post stolen inside a BART station overnight
- they cut the cable. I use a new cable with a ball bearing now in the bolt
head, kept there with bee's wax, but I'm gonna try the Security Bolt again
with the Bondhus tool. I'm actually gonna but five of the 5mm wrenches,
since that's the only size I need - "Bondhus 48364 5mm Tamper Resistant Tip
Hex L-Wrench with ProGuard Finish and Long Arm, 119mm, 5-Piece" $18 on
Amazon.

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-14 Thread BSWP
I don't worry about securing seat or stem while riding my Riv. But I do
when it's parked outside a store or cafe... a thief wearing wool knickers
and carrying Allen wrenches would look right at home whilst dismantling my
bike.

I like the ball bearing wedged into the bolt head approach, just be sure to
carry a steel pick to pry it out of you need to adjust while on the road. I
put the bicyclebolts items on my wife's XO-5, and they seem to work fine as
reliable fasteners.

Nothing against the Pit Lock using contingent here (he says in advance to
avoid further ruffling anyone's feathers) but the security bolt idea is a
great and inexpensive solution -- you just need to remember to pack along
the appropriate tamper resistant hex L- wrench if you're the type that
likes to make adjustments on the fly. It's a nearly fool-proof solution
since the Riv binder design embeds the nylock nut flush on the other side
.. all you're left to worry about is the parts pinching thief who carries
around a set of security wrenches with him while out hunting. And btw: you
can replace the saddle clamp bolt the same way, as well.

Shioji's spec is spot-on for the Riv standard seatpost binder. Lastly, the
wrenches that Security Bolts supplies with your purchase are pretty nice
but if you're looking to upgrade then Bondhus sells a decent set work
looking into:

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-12 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Patrick,
Assuming it's the same seat lug as other Rivs (excepting Clem, I think),
then you'll need to replace the "M6 Hex Socket Cap, 22mm length" with the
security bolt.

I went with the pitlock skewers and seat post binder bolt. They're really
spendy, but I don't worry about my wheels or seat post anymore. I think the
visible parts of the pitlock skewers are nice looking, for what that's
worth.

(One could still take the saddle by unscrewing at the rail/post interface.)

There are ways to secure the quill, but, other than putting a ball bearing
in there, it gets complicated. If I was that concerned about it, I probably
wouldn't be riding my Riv.

Good luck!
shoji

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-12 Thread Zed Martinez
I'm using a Pinhead locking skewer on my Clem right now. As Riv warns, they
work, but you'll eventually chip the paint. In keeping with that Clemmy
spirit I decided that was an OK compromise, plus with my saddle bag always
hanging over it it's not like any touch-up paint in the future will be so
visible. Otherwise, they do work, mostly. You have to crank'em pretty tight,
and I had to use a little Loctite 609 (thanks other discussion on here
about slipping seat posts for introducing me to that bit of magic) to fix
some slow slip it had even then, but it's been rock solid for the past
month now. Didn't know about those bolts you're linking to there, though.
Those will probably work better. I've got the outside to outside on my
Clem's binder clamp bits at 35mm, so, it's possible the 30mm bolt would be
long enough once in the recesses.

2016-02-12 Thread Tony DeFilippo
You'd need the bolt by itself, all the Riv seat post braze ons in familiar with
are recessed for a nut on one side and an Allen bolt recessed on the other.
I'm guessing the Joe will follow suit.

So it's just the length you need to figure out. I'm not positive but wouldn't
the proper length be common for any Riv with a similar seat post braze on? I
can measure mine tonight... Neat website, thanks for sharing.

Anyone have experience with the leather 'cardif mercia' seats they are selling?
 They look like B17 clones.

I don't know if these
 are any good in
practice (been meaning to try them, alas), but they're made by Pitlock for
exactly what you want to do.

A bit more elegant than Super Glue and a ball bearing, with a price to
match, but still cheaper than a replacement saddle or bars.
