Re: [RBW] Best Look or Look-clone pedals?

2011-03-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Curtis: I've got a pair of <500 mile KEO Pluses, red, no cleats that you can
have cheap -- make offer; they cost me about $160 2 years ago -- or in trade
for something, cycle related (SPDs, bags, fenders for 24" X 45 mm tires,
wireless computer, etc) or otherwise, the latter including a nice desk lamp
(gooseneck style, high quality, in a blue/pink/lavender/turquoise/red (for
my daughter's room), a nice wireless trackball for my Mac, a decent fountain
pen, a decent portable CD payer (to plug into my HK computer amp/speakers)
and doubtless other things I can't think of now.

Like these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/KEO-LOOK-Classic-Pedals_W0QQitemZ170614270678QQcategoryZ36138QQcmdZViewItem

I am getting better at clipping in to the Looks (and to the old, very nice,
single sided Dura Ace SPD pedals on the commuter) with a fixed drivetrain,
but I swear that slotted cleats and clips were easier. (I didn't like the
way that my feet kept migrating inward with the clip'd pedals because, with
the straight up-and-down Cyclotourist cranks, my bunion kept rubbing the
right arm.

2011-03-11 Thread Curtis Schmitt
I had completely forgotten that all of the bikes I used Keo Crabons on were
fixies... these Keo 2 Max are on my geared road bike so they really must be
more difficult to get into if I had an easier time with the old style on a
fixed gear.

I read on some forums that the Keo 2 Max had some issues with excessive
friction around the axle causing the pedal to spin with the cranks, instead
of floating smoothly. Mine don't stick but they certainly aren't as smooth
as the old style, now that I think about it. It was that consistency of
position I relied upon with the old pedal to be able to reliably turn it
over as I snapped the cleat in.

This is making me realize how much I miss them... onto ebay I go...

Re: [RBW] Best Look or Look-clone pedals?

2011-03-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks, Curtis. The pedals I have are similar to the carbons from the same
year but have (of course) no crabon. (They are within 20 grams or so of the
carbons of similar vintage and cost about $100 less, IIRC -- about $160.) So
perhaps, barring carbon, these are the nicest?

I must say that the old ealy '90s ones I used a few years ago felt good --
that incomparable, large, flat, stable platform -- which I why I bought the
Keo +'s -- but I do find all I've used harder to get into than,
surprisingly, my track pedals with clips and straps, even using the latter
with slotted cleats. Fixed gear use, of course, which complicates the entry
issue.

I did have a pair of 2008 Dura Ace clones but found the tension too tight
and, in a fit of retronostalgia where I want back exclusively to clips and
straps for a couple of years, I sold them.

Re: [RBW] Best Look or Look-clone pedals?

2011-03-11 Thread Curtis Schmitt
I used to rub the old Look Keo CrMo Carbons. Really great pedals. I've
sinced replaced with Look Keo 2 Max. I don't like them as much as the old
style, just harder to clip into for me. Maybe I'm still getting used to the
shape... I know it's supposed to be easier with the wider platform and metal
insert but still, I always seem to remember making fewer attempts to clip in
with the old version. Maybe because my new ones aren't carbon... I don't
know. The older version was much lighter as well, if that matters, so if you
find a good deal on them I'd say go that route.

I was going to buy the Keo 2 Max Carbons but claimed weight was within 20g,
more importantly actual weight was within 10g for the pair according to Weight
Weenies .

Haven't tried any of the non-Look Keo style pedals but did see quite a few
options when I was shopping around before deciding on the Keo 2 Max. I just
preferred the "look" of the Looks :) the most.
