It must be cockpit change weekend. On Saturday I installed the newly
arrived Midge bar on the Fargo to replace the very comfortable but too
narrow for offroad 42 cm Noodle -- that will go to the Ram. After one brief
10 miler to the PO yesterday, in the rain, the Midge feels quite good: not
as good on road as the Noodle, mind, but far better than any other wide
flared drop -- and I've used most of them. The long flat (38 cm; the width
at end of hooks is 58) and the angle, which is perfect for the hoods, makes
them much more usable for me than, say, the old WTBs, Woodchippers, Bell
Laps, Nittos, etc. I also used 46 cm Noodles but the deep drop and longer
reach made them excessively big for me.
The Midge is a compromise between on-road comfort and off-road control, but
it seems to be the best one so far.
Question: I have a problem with numbness on the heel of my left hand, and
with the required downward tilt of the short hooks, it's hard to find a
comfortable position here -- the right hand is fine (and the left has this
problem with any bar I've used). The problem is least with drop bars, and
then only when the ends of the hooks are more or less level with the
ground. The Midge can't be set up that way. I've got thick 3.2mm Lizard
Skins DSP tape applied; does anyone have any suggestions for this problem?
I don't wear gloves because I've found they don't help. Also, I'm generally
set up so that my hands aren't taking a lot of weight.
