2013-02-26 Thread hsmitham
@ Mike, Don't know that area too well either. Guess I got some riding to
do! I did a ride last year from my house up the old road through Santa
Clarita West on the 126 to Piru. On the way back it was all head wind! I
know I'll explore that area some more. I'll check out the Pine canyon rd
through lake Hughes at some point. Hey I think I'll be down in Carlsbad for
my Nephews play on Friday March 22nd. Perhaps a ride on Saturday?

Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.

2013-02-25 Thread hsmitham
@ Bryan, I've been thinking of the O.R.R since I saw the article Doug
mentioned in the Los Angeles Times.

I've ridden the LA river a few times and I always enjoy it. Good sights.

I understand the idea of getting into a car to go ride a bike seems
unseemly. That said the public transit system here in SoCal is woefully
lacking. I want to ride for a day in Long Beach I need to ride 15 miles to
the Gold Line in So Pasadena then catch two other trains total time 120 +
minutes one way. I would love a Metro station out my way say a station up
to 5 miles distance. I think the ride to Cullver City is doable then ride
the Ballona Creek bike trail to Marina Del Ray.

Yeah and what you say about riding the streets of Los Angeles definitely
builds some kind of character, hyper vigilant character.

@ Rperks, thanks for the Brovet blog I enjoyed it. Not certain I'm into
doing that entire ride especially the I-5 section. Which is why I presume
you have friends looking for a dirt route. I'm interested in that route
though. For now I'm going to do a day ride 40 mile RT on the O.R.R. and
determine whether it's suitable for a S240? Post the dirt route info when
its determined.

Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.

2013-02-25 Thread Bryan
For some reason, I've been daydreaming about the Ridge Route area myself
lately! It's hard for me to motivate to take a bike ride that involves a
car, though, especially since I share one car with my wife and kids. I
can't complain, with the Santa Monica Mountains and Topanga State Park so
close by. But I would like to see some new terrain, so an intriguing ride
report might give me the motivation to explore.

Nice to see your photos of the LA River path, Hugh. I rode that path for
the first time a couple of weeks ago, and it's great to see the LA River
actually start to look like a normal river in places.

Jim - I lived for a number of years in Milwaukee, and I do miss the

in LA provides plenty of character building in its own way : )

Actually the best riding are the dirt roads that cross Sawmill Mtn near the
top of the Ridge Route or Fish Creek canyon that crosses over to Warm
Springs. I've done many loops and rides in those areas over the years, many
on my rigid Bridgestone MB2 and later on my Hillborne and Ram.

David I'm not going to do the whole route. Drive up and park where Templin
Hwy and the 5 Fwy meet and go as far as Sandberg or just before it about 20
miles out. So 40 RT. Not really into 70 miles one way right now :)

this covers most Historical parts and misses the big climb out of Castaic.

Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.

2013-02-24 Thread hsmitham
Yes that's correct. There's if I'm not mistaken a 17.5 mile section that
was designated a historic route in 1997 but still closed pending repairs. I
intend to explore it.

>From the Ridge Route web page:

An Adventure Pass is NO LONGER REQUIRED. There are NO designated "Developed
Campgrounds" along the Ridge Route. Areas without "Developed Campgrounds"
are referred to as "Open & Despersed Areas."

"Open & Despersed Areas" allow camping.

This may be a S240 in the future.

By the by I been meaning to try out a ride from Castaic on the Old Ridge
Route, which was the original route by the old timers bringing supplies
from Bakersfield to Los Angeles, there's a 14 mile stretch designated a
historical landmark and is closed to traffic, the old pavement has
disintegrated and seems perfect for a mixed terrain ride it has something
like 2500 to 3000’ elevation. I may ride it this coming Saturday if the
weather cooperates and nothing on the calendar? If I do I'll report back on

H... The approach to the trailhead is a couple hours of spinning uphill
relentlessly with traffic passing you at 60mph. Great payoff when you get
off the hwy and onto the old road. Real nice climb up to Angelus Oaks.
Lunch up there at The Oaks restaurant, then a FAST downhill back to
civilization.
