Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Saddlebag Grip

2013-05-17 Thread Eric Platt
It was done at Jim Thill's shop. There was a piece of pipe sitting around
that was the right diameter. Just cut to length. Then I cut down two
corks, made a hole in the center for the skewer and shoved them in each
end. Seems to work just fine. Could get away without the corks and let
the pressure hold the ends to the pipe, but felt like experimenting and it
worked.

on Rivendell Hillborne. Plays well enough with all of those. The Grip's
offset changes the front-to-back position of the bag relative to the
saddle, rack and wheel, but I haven't really cared. I bought it so I can
take the bag with me, so I don't sweat security. Can't be too much worse
than leather straps in saddle loops, though, can it? However, if you want
better security, you could probably replace the Shimano quick-release with
one of those carved-nut axle caps - Riv and Peter White sell them - I use
one for a generator wheel but forget the brand name. Keep the keyed socket
on your key chain, and spin it off pretty quickly.
 Good luck!

How'd you made your 2nd home made grip? Interested in doing the same!

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Saddlebag Grip

2013-05-17 Thread Eric Platt
On my SimpleOne, if going somewhere I might worry about the bag being
stolen, will just carry it. Otherwise, it just stays on the bike with the
quick release.

One could flip the QR down so it is less obvious. Otherwise, as others
have mentioned, just use an inexpensive allen key security axle.

Mine also has a second home made grip so I can switch bags quickly. Useful
if I'm going to commute on the bike. All my clothing fits in a larger
Carradice which then can be carried into work.

Lastly, whatever method you use, make sure the little knurled nut holds
onto the q/r securely. Had a nice chrome once loosen up and go flying off
into the woods during a ride last year.
