2016-11-27 Thread Patrick Moore
$600! That is nice, and it's affordable. My brother recently bought a Black
Mountain monster cross frameset (forget name) and that too is nice,
especially given that he paid half of what I paid for my Matthews, and that
Chauncey charged between half and 1/3 of what he should have charged.

Thanks for the tip. One more to seriously consider.

I recall one day, long long ago, when my nephew was 4 years old (he's now
25 or 26 and earning a lot more than I), taking him to KMart, and telling
him that he could choose *one* toy. He slowly walked up and down the action
figure car shelf, carefully considering each package, and murmured solemnly
to himself, "So many choices!"

Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for this, Bill. Actually, I haven't yet gotten to the "what do I
really want divided by what can I really afford" part of the equation,
though I look back and tearfully sniff with nostalgia at that 1973
Motobecane I got for about $75 shipped, about 2/3 of which was shipping
(eBay seller made up with shipping some of what he lost on my winning bid;
IIRC, I won the bid with $25 and paid the $50 for shipping; circa 2006-7 or
so).

Really, what I ought to do is spend say $200-$300 and have the gofast
modified and powdercoated so that it will take a rear brake and the trigger
shift apparatus for the AM; I don't really *want* another bike that is not
a custom or a bona fide Rivendell Road model, unless I can be sure that
whatever substitute it might be really does handle and feel like a
Rivendell, which is certainly a long shot.

My hand over hand buying and selling ended some years ago; I really don't
want more bikes; well, that's not true, but I am far more picky now than
before. (Let's turn this into a "So, what *other *bikes would you buy if
you could?" thread.)

But this will be a nice application to play with at this early pipe dream
stage.

Hi Patrick...you know I've often sung the praises of my early 70's PX-10
which certainly has the bad paint...think the oln might be 126 and I'm sure
one in decent condition could be had for not too much. Mine was retrofitted
with a VO threadless bottom bracket, a cobbled together out of mostly tange
bits for HS so I could run Nitto tech stem and moustache barsI do
really love the ride. Or an old Raleigh...or take a look at Retrogrouch's
blog and take a peak at his lovely new Mercian which is a buttery yellow
with a metallic bronzy headtube...oh and it's a fix...I think it's
gorgeous. I like his blog,too.

Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the replies. I'll keep a sharp eye out for a good old racing
frame from the pre-crit era with horizontal dropouts and bad paint, for
cheap. And if anyone has more personal experience comparing particular
makes/models with Rivendell road models, I'd like to hear from him/her.

I think I'll prefer a racing bike for the lighter tubing and fewer braze
ons; this will be a dedicated, retro-style gofast bike (of a sort; I'm not
very fast, but I do like light bikes). I don't need the braze ons; I've got
2 other bikes with full braze ons.

Why a separate bike for the AM hub? Because why not? More particularly, it
would be nice to have it match somewhat the period of the hub. Craig, if
you read this, the AM is very definitely *not* a substitute for a TF!

I'll use wheels appropriate to the frame, which if it is used and meets my
other criteria will be 700C.

Ray: what exactly do you mean by "it rides naively"? I can live with French
threading for a top line Motobecane, though of course I'd prefer English.
Rather wish I'd kept the Motobecane I once owned.

John -- thanks. I'm not quite ready yet, though I'll keep the Brothel in
mind. Just ended up paying more than I had anticipated for the Matthews
crank conversion (but it will be nice!) I'm hoping for another deal as with
the Motobecane: $25 on eBay with $30-40 shipping.

Yup, Igor here..

Honestly I am not entirely sure - you'd have to look at Mercian geometry or
contact BJ...most of their frames are NxN - but I saw some old ones on ebay
with longer top tubes than seat tubes, if that is what you are after -
There is a Mercian on ebay right now that has a 52 or 53 seat tube and 55
top tube for instance..

Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Jim: the AM was a clubmen's (and doubtless clubwomen's) hub, with
freewheel, that had medium gaps as described -- direct, + 11.55%, - 12.5%.
I could set it up, for example, with a ~70" direct 2nd and have a 78"
high/3d and a 61" 1st/low, an excellent spread for my riding. (SA made 3
speed hubs for time trialists that were even tighter, and gave the
equivalent of a straight block, assuming your block was a 3 cog block.
There were 2, whose nomenclature I forget, but if your cruising gear was,
say, 80", they'd give you roughly a 85" high and a 75" low.)

The smart thing would be to have Chauncey add rear brake braze ons to the
gofast, but the alternative is to find a bike, or a frame, that handles
pretty much like a Rivendell road model.. I could live with 126; I just
want suggestions from people who know the Rivendell feel and can suggest
makes and models to look out for.

The more I think about this, the more it simply makes sense to spend a few
hundred $$ having the gofast altered; after all, I could still ride it
fixed, and that would remain its primary function. But as I age (61), I'm
finding it nice to have a range of gears.

(Yes, I know I could build up a derailleur bike, but I *want* a bike for
the AM.)

2016-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Is your name Igor? Or am I confusing you with another poster? If so, sorry.

Thanks. What models were these? And to be clear: you've found these to
mimic Rivendell road bikes' handling? I mean the signature stability with
intuitive or even unthinking perfection in turn-in.

I want ideas about a frame that has these handling qualities.
