I like those!

My favorite riding trousers are a pair of woolen thrift store
Polo-brand golf trousers. I cut the bottoms off and relocated the
adjusty buckles at the waistband to the bottom of the leg. Here in
Esteban's photo I was wearing them while adventuring in the Santa
Monicas with the Riv Bunch last year:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671...@n02/3894982599/sizes/o/in/photostream/

I find little need for anything shorter or lighter, as I don't get
overheated wearing these knickers even on hot days. Wool jerseys
and/or long sleeves, on the other hand, do get me feeling quite warm.

I find that a thick fabric works best for me, saddle comfort-wise. I
like to ride in boxer shorts and on leather saddles, and thin fabrics
can bunch up under my sit bones and chafe, but a thick fabric like
reasonably thick wool does not bunch up. I'm always on the lookout at
thrift stores, and I have a few pairs of trousers waiting for me to
get out the sewing machine.

2010-10-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
FWIW, my method is simply to cut and add velcro; I leave the pockets
on -- they are very useful, especially in winter when one doesn't have
access to rear jersey pockets. I favor high rise, pleated, full cut
dress trousers for comfort when in the hoods or hooks, of tightly
woven gabardine or plain weave wool for wear; so far, except for
shininess and saddle smudging, mine show little wear after several
seasons. I cut mine long, plus 8, hem and add long velcro because I
like them snugged up tight under the knee with a lot of bag.

FWIW, mine come out of the washer, Kookabura and delicates wash, hang
dry, looking decent.

Not mine; my home made knickers get heavy use during the cold months
and, so far, except for some shininess there is no sign of wear after
three seasons, for two of them.

I use top quality wool trousers for conversion.

Joneswares absolutely do not wear like this. Ibex duos don't either (but they
are not wool on the high wear areas). Can't speak to other brands.

I find wool to have inadequate abrasion resistance for shorts, tights and
trousers for cycling. They wear through in embarrassing places quickly
(sometimes within 2-3 rides).

I wear the wool "semi tights" as winter tights and they are fine. Especially
under a pair of shorts. Joneswares makes (in the USa btw) very good stuff, and
they are great people to work with. I wear their shorts and jerseys all year
round (with/without tights as you might expect)

I see it's time for the Perennial Plea:

BRING BACK THE WOOLY WARM PANTS!!

or at least something similar. A pant made in merino wool a little
looser than the Ralphas. - no dressy garmet pockets or details though.
Maybe zippered pockets. Unfortunately VERY expensive for something
you'll wear the seat out of - but long lasting otherwise.

OK - sorry, you're right I am whining.

I've used the Hind Munich tapered running pant a bunch too. I find
them a little too tapered for rides to the pub or coffee shop. Great
for hiking/xc sking etc though.

2010-10-04 Thread Fai Mao
This is atually a topic I've thought about at times.
I have some semi-casual pants that I can just barely get away with at work
that have a zipper around the mid thigh. I can remove them lower leg and get
shorts. The only draw back at work is that they have cargo pockets which
look kind of dress down. I generally just wear skin shorts and in cooler
weather put leg warmers on over the shorts. I then change in the closet in
my office.
