ALCTS CaMMS Cataloging & Classification Research Interest Group
ALA Annual Meeting, Anaheim, CA
Date: Sunday, June 24, 2012
Time: 10:30 am – Noon
Location: Hyatt Regency Orange County – Grand Ballroom E
Topic: Traditions and Transitions in Library Catalogs

Join CCRIG for a peek into the future of library catalogs, as cataloging
practices transition from AACR2 to RDA, and into the FRBR and linked data
environment. Find out how libraries are applying theoretical constructs now,
and what kinds of research we need to move forward with improving library
catalogs. Speakers will be available for brief question and answer sessions
following their presentations.

“Everyday Cataloger Concerns: A Research-Based Agenda for Library Cataloging,”
presented by Allyson Carlyle, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Paul J. Weiss, Violet Fox, and
Morgan Bell, University of Washington Information School.
This research project focuses on bridging the gap between conceptual, academic
cataloging research and the needs of catalogers. The presentation will review
the results of interviews and focus groups to identify the most important areas
of research for practicing catalogers, research directions for improving
library catalogs, and will provide a comparison of practicing cataloger views
and the views recently expounded by the Library of Congress about cataloging
research.

“Fishing for FRBR in MARC, Mining for Data in Free Text,” presented by Kelley
McGrath, Metadata Management Librarian, University of Oregon.
A report on part of a larger project, which uses the XC Metadata Services
Toolkit to extract MARC data to create provisional records for FRBR group 1
entities populated with structured data optimized for machine manipulation. The
discussion will include the methodology used for identifying data elements,
especially those that potentially occur in multiple MARC fields or may be
hidden in free text fields like notes, as well as examples of the problems
encountered, and an initial assessment of the accuracy of the process.

“RDA in RDF: Transitioning to the FRBR Catalog and the Semantic Web,” presented
by Kimmy Szeto, Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, Maritime College, State
University of New York.
In preparation for the transition from AACR2 to RDA, the presentation will
report on the potential of the application of RDA in the current catalog
environment. It will include a theoretical overview of RDA, RDF and Linked
Data; a demonstration of converting and encoding actual bibliographic records
to RDA, RDF and XML; and a review of implementation challenges in existing
library systems and how they can best prepare for the Linked Data future.
