I'm installing a small off grid system that has an existing
generator. It is a Honda EU 6500 converted to run on propane. It
is sweet. I haven't found out yet if the conversion cancelled the warranty.
This would be too small

Allan,
First, I'm a Generac sales service dealer so I have an obvious bias.
The Olympian brand are made by Generac for caterpillar.
Anything under 20KW will be residential and will be designed for short
runs. The Generac 6KW Ecogen is very well suited for your needs, as it is
built for long run
Allan,
I have heard from a generator sales / service friend that the water cooled
Generac gennies (I believe 20 kW and up) are totally different animals
than the standard Generac gennies. From personal experience and
word-of-mouth I wouldn't touch the standard generac machines, but the

The Generac QT and commercial units do not come with an ATS, you can buy
just the bare machine or have a complete solution designed for your load.
The Generac residential machines are good machines, as long as you
understand the intended use. We install lots of them. They are only

This would be too small for Allen's current project, but it seems
like a good solution

Thank you for the good responses. Here's what I have learned so far:
Re Onan: as I had mentioned in my original post, "The 6 year old
system has worn out two Onan residential standby generators." This
was before our initial visit. Both generators were air-cooled 3600
I have only limited experience with the GIllette, but I was impressed
with the specs on that 15 Kw unit, it was a water cooled 4 cyl running
at 1800 rpm, just what your customer needs, but probably way more than
they want to spend.
Can you add more PV to reduce the generator run time?

Onan/Kohler are the most common in this size that I know of.

Allan,
I've got a customer that runs 5 or 6 Onan LP generators, all in the 20
to 40 kVA range, for multiple ranch buildings. Lots of hours with very
little trouble. The 20-kW is a little bigger than you are looking for,
but I suspect it would be worth it in the long haul. The smaller ones
