Re: [RE-wrenches] Industrial battery chargers

Larry,
I've had very good luck with the gang at Quick Charge (
www.quickcharge.com )and they are located in Oklahoma. Currently they are on
about a 3 week lead time. I use them as a back up for my off-grid clients
big gennys that don't like to start in our cold climate. I like their
60A/48V unit and they also have a 100A unit but never have used. Good luck
my friend.

Hello battery wrenches,

I am looking for recommendations for an industrial grade battery charger for
our shop. Most of what I am finding is in India, China or Germany but I
would like something a little closer to home. I am looking for these
features:
• automatic 3 stage charging selectable for 6 or 12 volt AGM, flooded or GEL
• manual adjustable voltage control up to 20+ Vdc
• manual adjustable current limiter 1 to 50+ amps
• adjustable timer shut off
Thanks,

Hey Chris;

Thanks for the link, they have a charger I've been looking for for a long time:
a selectable voltage portable unit. Front switch lets you select 24, 36, or 48
volt battery.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Trace inverters undercharging batteries.

2010-12-28 Thread Starlight Solar, Larry Crutcher
Jesse,

It looks like you said the battery was replaced with Rolls. If so, good choice.
Without extensive regular testing, keeping a log book, and possessing the
knowledge to do it right, you will not really know if you are fully charging
the battery to 100% SOC. From the information in your post, it leads me to
think that this is the case.

IMO, the single most important thing you can do for this customer is install a
battery monitor system. I recommend the trimetric. While this will not take the
place of skilled battery testing, it will give you far more information than
you have ever had. This is where to start. You will then know how high and low
the voltage got each day. You will see how many AH are removed and replaced
each day. You will have eyes to see your battery health like never before.

Please post the size of the battery bank, the cables and length used to connect
the inverter and all the generator information. Perhaps we can help more.

Larry

  Wrenches,

I have been in contact with a person living off-grid in Northern MN. She had
some problems with her system and called me. I teach a solar class at a local
community college and have been helping her in my free time (free of course!).

Some of her batteries froze last winter and she said she dumped out the
electrolyte and put new in (6 V Rolls)

Her main concern was the batteries never fully charging. She has a very nice
Kohler gen, but from what I have been told, the Trace inverters may be part of
the problem with the batteries undercharging. I have limited experience with
off grid applications and any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Jesse

Hi Drake (et alia)

An quality inverter/charger would work for half of our situations. The other
half is that we do capacity recovery of AGM and flooded batteries. For that
I need unregulated or controllable voltage and manual current limiting.

I've been through this one, to balance the third leg of a 3 phase generator
which has a pair of stacked SW4024s on it. After a long search of the
available industrial chargers, we added another SW4024. The system had
certain heavy surge loads, which we put on a special panel powered by the
third inverter.

For the money, I think another inverter is the best bet. Maybe Chinese
imports may change the situation, but if you want to stay away from them,
another inverter would likely still be your most economical choice.
