Weight Lifting Might Raise Glaucoma Risks
Sep 13th - 6:20am BRASILIA, Brazil, Sep 13, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) --
A study by Brazilian
doctors has suggested that weightlifting could increase eye pressure, raising the weightlifters risk of glaucoma. Geraldo Magela Vieira, of the Institute of
Specialized Ophthalmology
and UNIPLAC medical school in Brasilia, Brazil, and colleagues examined 30 healthy men aged 18-40 at a Brasilia health club, WebMD reported Tuesday. The doctors tested the air pressure inside the men's eyes while they performed various weight lifting exercises. They found that intraocular pressure rose 90 percent for men who held their breath on one of four lifts, and rose 62 percent for men who did not hold their breath at all. Vieira said the increased pressure during lifts could raise risk of glaucoma. The team published their results in the Archives of Ophthalmology journal. Success is not measured by what you do compared to what others do, it is measured by what you do with the ability God gave you.
