“TAKING BACK OUR RESPONSIBILITY AND IDENTITY” Forum

“We are still being told what’s in our best interest…”
(M. Dodson)

This forum is a first to compare historically what has happened within
the
areas of legal and social policies regarding Indigenous peoples locally
and
in the United States. The US models of policy and practice relating to
American Indians in a colonial context have been replicated globally in
many
forms on Indigenous peoples and this forum seeks to analyse this to
gain
better perspectives for future directions in areas of Indigenous social
justice issues in Australia.

The key note speaker for this event is Russell Means, co –founder of the

American Indian Movement (AIM). Russell has been active in his people,
the
Lakota Nation’s struggle for independence since the early 1970’s. One of
his
major stands was with the Lakota people and many other AIMsters such as
Dennis Banks, at the Wounded Knee memorial in 1973. Russell will discuss
the
distinct identity of Indigenous peoples and the struggle to maintain
that
culture under continuing modernist threats of industry and mining.

Other Speakers: Henrietta Fourmile: former Indigenous coordinator at the
UN
Environment Programs on Biodiversity and currently working at the
University
of Western Australia. Henrietta will discuss the importance of
protecting
the Indigenous cultural identity and its intellectual property. Michael
Mansell: Manager of the Tasmanian Aboriginal LegalCentre. Michael will
discuss the ways Article 3 of the UN Charter of Indigenous Rights has
been
acted upon by Indigenous peoples here and in the US and how it can work
within the current political and social frameworks.

The forum will be held on Friday November 12, at the
Newtown Theatre, 354 King St, Newtown from 5.00pm till 10.00pm.
