Yes, it is in the kernel since 2.4.7. Later there were another fix for bug in
knfsd (related to nfs v2). It is in 2.4.10 (did not check earlier versions,
patch was sent to Linus at 09/07/2001)

Please check (with ps) that kernel nfs daemon is running. Also "netlink
device emulation" should be turned on in kernel configuration on a server
side.
