Xorg prior to version 1.14 didn't have per-device idletime counters, the
availability of which gnome-desktop and gnome-settings-daemon didn't
check for.
This caused a crash on Debian's Xorg 1.12.

rendering code where we inadventently leak backgrounds. This means
over time (especially with slide show animations) the shell memory
usage can balloon to gigabytes of memory usage and then die from the
OOM killer.
