Hello,
Many years ago I built crossband radio setup going from a simplex PPL 6060
to a EF Johnson 800 MHz trunk radio. The simplex PPL 6060 was not good

Nick,
Many states/regions have an SNP, or test pair, or nonprotected pair of
UHF frequencies for conceptual studies, experimenting, etc. If your area has
such a pair then that would be a natural for your mobile repeater.
That being said, please pay attention to the advice already given

HI Nick,
I'm going to say this as nicely as I can.
Mobile repeaters are for the most part, completely useless. Most
coordinators want to know exactly where you are going to put your
repeater before they will Coordinate a Freequency
If you jump up to the 902 band, there is an established Itinerant Repeater
Pair in SERA Land and some other states which are patterned after SERA's
Bandplan...
In many of those areas 927.4875/902.4875 is available for Mobile or
Portable Repeater OperationsUnspecified locations and tones..
Alex: I would urge you to look elsewhere for an antenna location. I worked
for a state forestry agency for ten years and we did not let anybody except
other governmental agencies on our lookout towers or radio towers. There
were just to many liability and cooperation problems when a problem

I'd still check the supply. One bunch of hardware may be more tolerant of
that type of problem than another..

Mathew,
If you mean VXR-5000, then yes, it is completely programmable. You
still need to tune the front end manually, but the frequencies, tones,
timers, and features are programmed with Vertex software.
