Samlex makes an external battery backup box with the model number of BBM-12100. The online available User Manual for the box contains a lot of good information and a circuit diagram. So if you wanted to buy or build your own there's enough information to do both. Samlex makes a fairly decent line of external DC control/supply products and their pricing seems very fair.
