Thank you to everyone for your help and comments!
I plan to seek out help from a local commercial radio shop and have
him set me up properly.
I'm now in my fifties and have been a Ham since I was thirteen. No way
do I want to jeopardize my ticket.
I am not sure if this thread can be closed but

Paul Rob,
The issue with having the rig capable of transmitting on GMRS can be a
problem.
Many Ham rigs can be legally opened for MARS, etc
A lot of them are Moto R1225's, CDM1250's, older R100's, GM300's , GE MASTR
II's, etc.
All legal.

especially wired would be a problem.

About any Ham vintage rig made in last 15 years is not good for a

Well, then a lot of recent vintage repeaters like the Vertex are not good
for repeaters, even though that's what they're made for.

of setting one up in our small town.
Will I need a simple controller or interface of some type that may be
readily available?
Any help in the correct
