The Path of Accomplishment © 2006 Julie Jordan Scott I didn't want to walk today, and I did. I didn't feel like writing my morning pages, and I did. Wanting to do something and feeling like doing something: both of these are awesome, but I seem to consistently earn more self respect when I do the stuff I have on my list even when I don't feel like it. These are the times that when all is said and done, I pat myself on the back and peer over my shoulder to see how far I have come. On my walk, I heard my favorite traveling bird song, the familiar call of an unseen bird from my childhood in the Northeastern United States. I know now to expect her song here, in Bakersfield, in October. My walks are the only way I can experience her presence with my entire heart, soul and being. If I hadn't walked, I might have missed this annual celebration of history and the present. My morning pages today collected surprises from Yesterday, like a note about one of the most Profound conversations I have ever had with Emma yet. We talked about death - about the human spirit, about being ready to die and the afterlife. I even wrote a very short poem, expanding upon the Earlier sound delight "tepid lemonade." Here is what came out: "She sits, Sipping tepid Lemonade Considers living Still" I rarely cease to be pleasantly surprised by the path of my own accomplishment, with the most glimmering markers along the way being from those times when I would have rather been inspecting my navel than taking on a task that bore no tastiness at first, but whose fruit became more fragrant and juicier than I ever could have imagined in the first place. Otherwise my writing was a mishmash of to-do's and possibilities and the promises from a fortune cookie and a message to my brother and a bit of cheerleading sing song mixed in with some dialogue from "Picnic." The point is, I did it. I didn't want to do it. I didn't feel like doing it. And now, my life - and yours - is changed positively because of it. There is something to contemplate. Wait - I need to Look over my shoulder. There it is, the gleaming Path of my accomplishments. Mmmmm. It is a place of peace, satisfaction, gratitude and humble joy.
