I could sit and watch him for hours.

His focus was pure and his delight, even purer.

Sam stood near the edge of the water, the place
where the wetter sand met the less wet sand. He
studied its ebb and flow with an intense presence,
occasionally jumping up and down when he
was especially happy about what he saw.

I got up from my perch on the sand to be closer
to him. We did a he-man impression, calling out
to the vast ocean, "You want a piece of me? Huh?
You want a piece of me?"

Sam howled with laughter at our simple, ultra-human
tactics. We knew it was a fallacy, this thinking we
could really impact the force of the ocean.

It was fun pretending, though. There was no
reason to stop.

Katherine wrote "Samuel" and "Katherine" in the
sand. The ocean came along and wiped it away, erased
it in one foul swoop.

Katherine screamed in lament. "Stop, water, Stop!"
she ordered.

The water didn't really care about her order. She
scribed it in the sand, a bulwark in front of the
names. "Kathie. Samuel. Emma" and "Stop,
Water! Stop!"

She was victorious for a few moments.

A persistent wave arrived and erased her words again.

Sam howled with laughter. This might have been the
most amusing episode in his little life ever. On the drive
back to Bakersfield, he could still be heard saying
"Stop! Stop! Stop!" in a variety of vocal registers.

"What are you laughing at, Sam?" I asked him.

"Katherine. in the waves.'Stop! Stop!' peals of
laughter bubbled up again. More of what Anne
Lamott calls "carbonated holiness."

He did it again last night, more than twenty four
hours after-the-fact.

He did it again this morning, when we were eating
pancakes, all four of us gathered around the kitchen table.
"Stop! Stop! Stop!" Laughter, laughter, laughter. Katherine
wasn't laughing.

I have the feeling she will, eventually.

Years from now I can see Sam, with his children, playing
in the surf. I can see Katherine, holding hands with her
younger nieces and nephews, writing their names in the
sand, telling the ocean "Stop! Stop! Stop!"

I can hear carbonated holiness bubbling up and
over their round bellies.

I hear the echoes of their voices forever in time,
never stopping.
