Re: Exchange and SQL Database backup?

2000-03-23 Thread Matthew Tevenan

David,

Retrospect 5.1 for Windows ships with an external batch script that will
stop Exchange services automatically before backup of Exchange databases,
then start them up after the backup is done.

If you're savvy enough in this area, I suspect that you can tweak this same
batch file to stop SQL's services before backup as well, then restart them
after it's done.

Because of the complexities of external scripting, I'm afraid Dantz can
provide only minimal technical support for these features. See Addendum II
of the Retrospect User's Guide Addendum that ships with 5.1 for information
on setting up these external scripts.

Subject: Exchange and SQL Database backup?

In evaluating Retrospect we found that there is no way to dynamically back
up MS Exchange and SQL databases. Has anyone found an acceptable solution
for this problem? Shutting down the services before backup is a major PIA!

USB Drives?

2000-03-23 Thread Workingmacs

Are there any USB tape drives on the market supported by Retrospect? There
used to be a 4/8GB Travan by AIWA, but that was withdrawn last year.
Onstream has a 15/30GB ADR drive, but it doesn't have Retrospect support. Is
that coming? Are there any other options? I have some clients who are
willing to tolerate USB speeds, but need the capacity of tape.

Re: Backup Device Comaprison

2000-03-23 Thread Pam Lefkowitz

I am looking for a web site or other source of information that has a
comparison of the various backup devices, their pros cons, costs, etc.
There is some helpful information on the Dantz website, but I was looking
for more device specific information.

Len,

Macintouch had a nice "extra" on it a while back on this. Steve Cohn did
the report and it can be found at
http://www.macintouch.com/hicapbackup.html. It has graphs and cost/MB
stats. I don't know how reliable these figures are, but they didn't seem
out of line to me. If, for some reason, it isn't there anymore, I've got
the page archived here and can send it to you.

HTH,

Pam
