Recommend CD RW drive for Retrospect Express Mac

2000-11-02 Thread Greg Morin

Sorry to bother the list with this, but I need some recommendations
for a CDR or CDRW SCSI drive that works with Retrospect Express on a
mac. I checked the supported devices list on the Dantz site but
unfortunately it doesn't really help since (for example) QPS (make of
the Que drive) seem to be using totally different part numbers than
what Dantz is using. Either that or Dantz doesn't support any
currently shipping QPS drives... Or, for example if I look in the
MacWarehouse or APS catalogs they don't specify part numbers or OEM
mechanism part numbers so I have no idea how to reference that item
with what's on the approved list.

Anyway... this is for a 7100/80 so I'm stuck with SCSI (no nubus USB
or Firewire cards).

I'm interested in the QPS CD-RW 6x4x24, external SCSI or APS CD-RW
8x8x24 SCSI Pro2 but don't know if either one works with Retro
Express... and I'm totally open to any suggestions even if these do
work with it.

Thanks in advance,
-Greg Morin

I recently bought an external SCSI Yamaha CDRW 8824. It works just
fine with Retrospect Express 4.3. It also does a good job of burning
music CDRs (50 so far, with only one coaster). I recommend it highly.

If you get this model, be sure to update the version of toast that
comes with it, and also run the firmware update from Yamaha.

A while back, I read Yamaha had released a beta firmware update that fixed
this drive's incompatibility with Retrospect. Does anyone have an update
on
that beta's progress? Anyone having trouble after applying the beta?

So far, it's worked flawlessly on my 7600/120. I was having serious
trouble with Retrospect backups before installing the updated driver.

Keeping a CD-R/CD-RW in the tray

2000-03-22 Thread Bruce Haig

I thought I read somewhere where you should not leave your CD in your
burner when not in use. Has anyone ever heard that?

If so, what is the reason? Since I only use it for daily backup it
would be much easier to just let the disk stay there.

Your thoughts please.

Eric,

Retrospect Macintosh does not yet support the Plextor PX-W8432Ti (I think
this is what you're referring to; there's no such thing as an 843Ti) as a
FireWire device. We'd like to in the future, though. Unfortunately I don't
have any approximate date of support...

2000-02-25 Thread PetersJB

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I too have heard from Yamaha (Tom
Bailey, 1/31/2000) that "Dantz Software is testing the firmware update."
Unless I missed something Neither Matthew Tevenan nor other Dantz
spokesperson has indicated this to be the case. Of course they haven't said
it's BS either.

I guess I'd like to ask if Dantz can indicate if there's any truth to the
statement made by Tom Bailey. Even if Dantz isn't responsible for the
performance of the drive, has Yamaha provided a firmware update for testing?

 Moe,

Dantz has verified that there is a bug in the firmware of the Yamaha 6416
CD-RW drive. While we have notified Yamaha of this bug, until Yamaha
releases a fix for this problem, we can no longer officially support
 backup
to the Yamaha 6416 CD-RW drive with Retrospect or Retrospect Express.

The bug will cause the drive to intermittently return error 100 (illegal
command) when used with Retrospect on slower Macintosh and PC models. We
have some suggestions to try to work around this problem: use a faster
backup computer if there is one available, or try to increase the data
 rate
by disabling software compression and minimizing external activity during
 backup.

Though you can make Retrospect recognize this drive by purchasing an
 upgrade
to Retrospect 4.2, you may see the error when backing up to this drive on
your Mac. The only computers I have not seen this error occur on are Power
Mac G3s and G4s, though even these fast machines are not guaranteed to
 work
 correctly with the drive.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you. You have been added
to our list of customers with this problem and will be notified when newer
firmware from Yamaha is available. We're hoping to receive a resolution to
 this soon!

Retrospect 4.0 won't back up to my new Yamaha 6416S CD-RW drive (1.0c
firmware). It does not even see the drive. I have:

 - checked for newer ROM software from Yamaha
 - gotten the latest (and last) driver update (14) from Dantz

Dantz's support folks say no version of Retrospect works with this
drive; but they are working on it.

So my question is: Is it really this hopeless? Anyone have any
workaround? I'll gladly update my Retrospect 4.0 if it will help.

If not -- any other way to backup to this CD-RW other than backing up
to a disk file and then using Toast to copy the file to CD?
