Onstream FW30 - Error 105 Device Problem
Title: Onstream FW30 - Error 105 Device Problem Does anyone know what to make of an Error 105 - Device Problem? We're using an Onstream FW30 drive. The problem seems to occur only when a backup is scheduled, not when it is done on-demand. Originally we were running Mac OS 8.6 and old FireWire drivers. We updated to Mac OS 9.04 and FireWire drivers 2.5, but the problem persists. Lurker's post: OnStream ADR seems ok
I needed a new tape drive for my single Mac (G4 cube) office, and settled on this -- the FireWire attachment. Last night it went well. I backed up 53 Mb from 2 disks. I needed Retrospect 4.3A, which came free (4.3, which I already had, didn't work). I'll let you know if there are problems -- Matthew B. Re: Opinions of Onstream Echo drives
I've installed 7 of these: 5 SCSI and 2 USB. Overall I'd say they work well. All 7 clients continue to use them. Most the calls I get is about understanding Retrospect (but that's another discussion). The problems I've seen with the Onstream include: - The drive doesn't always see a new tape after a tape swap. The 1.08 firmware was supposed to resolve this, but it hasn't totally. The workaround is simple. Turn the drive off and on. That seems to clear it. - One USB drive was defective. It was replaced, and I got Onstream to throw in a free cleaning cartridge in retribution. - One tape was defective (out of about 20 I've used so far). It broke. It was replaced by Onstream. Unfortunately it was for the same client who had the bad USB drive. He wasn't real happy. But the system is know working for him (though he still hasn't paid me!!). - At first their Tech Support knew nothing about Macs. I think that's getting better. I won't give their Tech support high marks. It took them about an hour to acknowledge that the USB drive was bad. They didn't have equipment at hand to check out my problem. Bottom line is I continue to use them and recommend them. I don't see anything else at this price point which is competitive. My clients are unwilling to spend over $1000 for an VXA-1. And my success with Travan isn't much better. Re: Opinions of Onstream Echo drives
We've been backing up to Onstream's Echo drives (DI30: IDE, 15GB) with mixed results. I like these drives (price is nice, IDE interface) but lately I've been wondering about the quality. We use them here (scsi SC-50 drives) with good results (Macintosh Retro version 4.3). I have seen oddities where a particular cartridge works in one drive but not another, but overall reliability has been good, and the price is awesome. I used DAT for years (including autoloaders!), and I will never go back to it. What a nightmare that proved to be. RE: Opinions of Onstream Echo drives
Almost everyone I know hates DAT drives; regardless of the OS or backup software. I will only use a technology which has built-in hardware ECC (error correction) for my backups. As I understand it, this is lacking from the Onstream drive. My data is backed up on 8mm (not the old 5 or 7GB version). Alot of people who have suffered from media problems using 8mm are talking about the older MP based tapes. In today's world, 8mm uses AME tapes (advanced metal). The difference is night and day (500 passes with an old video grade tape vs 30,000 passes of today's AME based tape). DLT drives still use MP media. That is one of the big reasons they have not kept pace with the other technologies like AIT or M2. DLTs will not be able to use AME media because AME is not built for bi-directional usage (DLTs write/read bi-directionally). I doubt we'll see an AIT drive priced like an Onstream in the very near future but maybe one day... In the meantime, I'll pay a little more for better peace of mind. This is just my two cents; everyone has a pair of pennies! :) Steve -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.

Re: onstream deal??
Just a note on our experience with OnStream. We bought an Internal ADR30 drive and installed it in a PowerTowerPro 350. We immediately lost everything on the SCSI chain. The drive works fine but I no longer can use my Zip, Jaz drives. Try checking ID #'s and termination. I have a internal drive in an external case on the external chain of an 8600 (which also has a second, built-in SCSI bus, plus an ATTO UW card) with another hard drive and CD-burner, and I can see everything just fine... -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've installed about 5 of the SC-30 models on Macs. They work well. The only issue I've run into is that sometimes the drives goes offline after swapping tapes. Turning the unit off and on clears the problem. This issue was well documented earlier on the Mac Managers maillist. There is still no word from OnStream about a fix for the problem. Is it possible that the problem is in the Retrospect Driver??? Re: onstream deal??
Phil, When you say the drive goes offline, what exactly do you mean? Does it disappear from the SCSI bus? Retrospect's driver wouldn't have anything to do with random disappearances from the SCSI bus. Please call us at 925.253.3050 or e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with full details of the problem so we can help you troubleshoot it. But who ever would want to use any backup program OTHER than Retrospect on Mac OS? ;) Jim Eric Ullman said, in a previous message: Retrospect for Mac OS and Windows actually use their own custom drivers, built right into the software. On the Mac, we write pretty much the only drivers available for tape drives. With Windows, Retrospect does not require (or use) the manufacturer's or Microsoft's driver -- we support the device directly. Re: Retrospect 5.0 PC w/ OnStream
Victor, Retrospect 5.0 does not yet support backup to any Onstream drives. We're still working to qualify these drives on the Windows side, though we hope to introduce support soon. As soon as Onstream releases their latest Mac firmware updater, however, Retrospect Mac (version 4.2 with the RDU 1.9) will be able to back up to the Onstream Echo 30 GB. New Mac RDU / DDS-4 / OnStream
Hi all, Two new Retrospect Driver Updates for Macintosh are now available from the Dantz website. They are: RDU 1.9 for Retrospect 4.2 RDU 1.8 for Retrospect 4.1 These RDUs add support for new DDS-4 DAT drives and autoloaders from Seagate, HP, and Sony. They also fix a bug we discovered in Retrospect 4.1 and 4.2 that could affect the usability of older DDS-1, -2, and -3 media in DDS-4 DAT drives. Additionally, RDU 1.9 adds support for the OnStream Echo SC30 SCSI tape drive. Please note that the firmware of the OnStream Echo drive must be updated to version 1.06 for Retrospect compatibility; versions prior to 1.0.6 are not supported and will not work. Unfortunately, OnStream is not expecting to have the 1.06 firmware updater available on their website for at least 30 days. Beginning in February, OnStream will offer a Mac version of their Echo 30GB drive, bundled with Retrospect, for an estimated street price of $699. To recap, the following are all required for OnStream support with Mac Retrospect: o Retrospect 4.2 o RDU 1.9 o Firmware 1.06 from OnStream (currently unavailable) We are working to add OnStream drive support to the Windows version of Retrospect in the near future. The new Retrospect Driver Updates may be downloaded from the Dantz website. http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=rdu Happy New Year!
