I had a similar experience yesterday.
What I found was that I'd authenticated against the SAMBA server with a
username/password combination which didn't include access to the share I
wanted to backup. Retrospect asked me for a username/password, but then
returned an error.
I restarted the machine and authenticated as a user who had access to all
the shares and the problem went away. When I thought about it for a while
this made sense as initially I was trying to authenticate against the SAMBA
server with two different username/password combinations at the same time.
