Ah, I didn't realize you meant to force a subscription update. I tried this
and can confirm that it fixes the problem.

On linux running chromium... I successfully updated my adblock subscription

Confirmed. The problem seems to be go away when I disable AdBlock. However,

Another workaround is to go into developer mode and hit the elements
button. The comment box should appear immediately
