Yeah, Ubuntu provides nearly all the dependencies we need, and all
development takes place on Ubuntu, so I'd heavily recommend that.

I don't know if it still is, but the docs used to say the "semi-official" 
distro was Ubuntu. I've installed twice on Ubuntu machines, and it went
