That was what I was trying to think of, but I didn't have it memorized and
didn't have a bottle of motor oil handy to quote! LOL

Been there, done that. Just curious. What is the effect of the dog
saliva after the dogs licked it all off? What is the mental effect on a
horse who has to stand around with dogs licking its feet? Actually, I've
gotten scared of all this stuff because I know fire ants LOVE to get all
over the bottom of a feed can that had vegetable oil in it. I got
worried that lard would attract fire ants. From what I've read, not
really any of the topical products do anything but make us feel better
anyway.

that is a petroleum product. and prolonged use of it is bad. the
petroleum goes to the fat cells and stays there.
there is a big difference between pure animal lard and old used motor
oil.
and that is why we use the pure lard, it ia an animal by product.
so the hoof just soaks it in and helps keep the natural hoof moisture
in.

hard hooves are the best!

but to hard hooves are bad because it takes the natural expansion and
contraction away from the heels.
and that comes up with pinched heel.

a good hoof supplement is horse guard biotin. all the horses, mules,
and donkeys in our barn get 1 ounce od biotin a day.
that will also give good hoof growth.

[RC] Dry Hooves

2002-04-17 Thread Ridecamp Guest

Wendy Merendini [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hm, in my experience putting anything topically on a horse's
hoof really does not do much. I live in the middle of the
Mojave Desert so I do know a few things about a dry climate with
sand, sand and more sand everywhere.
If your horse has feet that break off or crack easily you may be better off attacking
the problem nutrition with a good hoof
supplement.

When I bought Flikka as a four-year-old, she had spent most of
her life on a wet pasture. Her hooves were soft and not in the
best shape for life in the desert. I put her on a good hoof
supplement, Foundation, and in a year her feet were in great
shape.

Feet in the desert are going to hard, and as far as I can tell
there is nothing wrong with that, or at least in my 20 years of
horse ownership while living in the desert it never has been...

Not on my fingernails, Not on my horse's hooves!!! Read the warning on a
bottle of motor oil.

WARNING: Continuous contact with used motor oil has caused skin cancer in
animal tests. Avoid prolonged contact. Wash skin with soap and water.

Does it sound like something you would want to apply and leave on?

Used motor oil as a hoof dressing used to be quite common in Quarter Horse
circles in the Southeast, especially since it was cheaper than hoof black for
show horses.  I was never comfortable with using it,
though.

Hi All,  I tried to send a reply to
Teresa and RC yesterday but evidently it didn't go through.  I had the
same questions re: dry hooves on my horses and  asked my farrier what he
used last week.  He said he has had great success with "used motor
oil".  I personally have not verified this by seeing his horses or seeing
him do it.  Has anyone heard of this "cheap" method and would there be
any detrimental effects???  I won't try it until there is more
  info.  Thanks, Lindak

pure lard is very good at maintaining supple hooves.

rubbed into the coronary band it also stimulates good hoof growth.

it also is very inexpensive to buy.

works very good on proud flesh and scars.

we recommend it to all of our shoeing clients.
