Well at least one problem is sorted. The day I figured out the
compilation tag problem I almost wept, such was the relief at finally
getting it to work!

I think this, together with adding MusicBrainz and other web sources to
mp3tag (as per http://www.anytag.de/forums/index.php?showtopic=1794)
should mean that it'll be a lot easier to check compilations are
correctly tagged.

It would be useful if this stuff was mentioned in the mp3tag wiki.

The COMPILATION=1 tag isn't set by default. You need to select all the
tracks you wish to tag with this and then (I haven't got mp3tag on the
pc at work but off the top of my head i think you need to...) go to
TagSources drop down menu and select advanced. Then add a COMPILATION=1
tag and save.

I'll check when I get home tonight!

2008-04-17 Thread Siduhe

If you select a file and look for extended tags, it will show you if the
COMPILATION tag is set.

An easier way to see across your whole library is to add a custom
column that will show you. Select customise columns, New, and type:

Name - Compilation
Value - %compilation%
Field - %compilation%

Tick Numeric

Press Ok

This should add a column to the library view which will show if
Compilation is set. 1=yes it is a compilation. 0=no it isn't a
compilation and blank means the tag isn't set.

HTH.

with SS7 you must have tracks from compilation albums tagged with the
COMPILATION =1 tag or else they show up all over the place. This will
force all compilation tracks to appear under the "Various Artist"
listing. I spent days trying to figure this out and it has also worked

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Compilations messing up Artists list

2008-04-16 Thread mr-b

Thanks for all for the useful info.

To help me understand better, here's my summary interpretation of the
issues - please correct me on anything! (I'm filing this under "Things
I wish I'd known before ripping" ...)

If using EAC configured as per the Slimdevices wiki, it uses freedb as
a tag source, and which has broken-format tags for some compilations.
It is hard to detect this at rip time since EAC doesn't preview the tag
allocations. So one needs to use mp3tag (or other tag viewer) afterwards
to check for correctness e.g. a blank title tag is definitely wrong.
Also I've noticed that the EAC-generated filenames are often formatted
"track# artist title - artist title". Mp3tag can use Convert Filename -
Tag to generate correct tags from this.

So, given that I've now finished ripping, what I really need is a
tagging app that:

1) scans my files and highlights those with obviously incorrect tags
2) uses a better quality tag source db
3) allows you to preview all the tags

My current method of achieving #1 is either by spotting weird entries
in the SC Artists list or bulk-loading entries into mp3tag and sorting
by title to find delinquent entries, but this is all rather laborious,
so I'd prefer something more automated and intelligent.

For #2, I tried mp3tag with amazon.com/de but those too often have
incorrectly-formatted tags.

Still got to find time to try out MusicBrainz (Picard)...

Sorry, I probably wasn't very clear. You still get your info from those
sources but you need to set up in EAC how it uses that info. In the
options there a setup on what field goes where and you can change that
to suit your needs. By dynamic I mean it's not set in advance but based
on the tags of each album using masks ie instead of Dark Side of
the Moon. You use masks in Mp3tag also so it's a good thing to get an
idea on how they work. I'm still learning. There are lots of different
ways to have EAC use the info depending on how you like your music
organized. I changed to dbpoweramp because it's a lot easier to set up
and you can see what info is being used from freedb and allmusic to tag
the main fields and change if you want before it rips. It also gets
album art and is every bit as secure a ripper. But EAC will do a fine
job you just have to play with it more. Smc2511's post will get you
started on fixing your current ones. Mp3tag is a great program, one
that I actually donated to because it saved me a couple of times. The
more you use it and read up on it the more you'll appreciate it.
Anyway I hope I haven't confused you more.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Compilations messing up Artists list

2008-04-15 Thread smc2911

Although it is true that freedb only has a track title not an artist
title for tracks, EAC will handle compilations correctly when tracks
are tagged with the convention "Artist / Title". However, people do not
always stick to the convention, using things like "Artist - Title" as in
your example, which confuses EAC. Fortunately through the power of
"Actions", mp3tag, you can fix this. Here's how:

In mp3tag, load up the offending tracks, highlight them and then select
Convert > Actions. Click the button with the star to create a new action
group, call it something like "Artist - Title split", then click the
star button to create a new action, select "Guess values", enter
%artist% into Source Format (since that's where the data is!) and
%artist% - %title% in as the guessing pattern, then press OK and OK.
Then click the checkbox next to your new action group, hit OK and,
voila, mp3tag will split all the artist tags and populate the track
tags correctly. Having created this action group, next time you only
need to select Convert > Actions and check the action group to use it
again. If you come across other dodgy freedb tags (e.g. I've seen
Artist -- Title) you can create actions to fix those too. Luckily, most
compilations work properly, but this example does give you a hint of the
power of Actions!

Let me know if anything in this explanation is confusing and I'll
happily clarify.

If you don't want to type all the info yourself you need to get the
track and album information from somewhere. This is usually either
freedb or musicbrainz.
I don't quite understand what you mean by "using dynamic naming using
masks" but if you refer to tagging the files based on filename then you
still need to get the filenames set up somehow.

But maybe I just don't get your point.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Compilations messing up Artists list

2008-04-15 Thread Nonreality

It's not EAC or Freedb. You have the choice on how you want it to set up
your files by using dynamic naming using masks. It's much more
complicated on various artist type albums. I've finally started
grouping all my albums under the album artist tag which is the same as
artist in most cases. I leave artist to show who the artist singing is
and if it's many artists and not one major one I'll set the album
artist to Various Artists. It will show up in SB as Various Artists
but won't populate the artist field. If it is a album with one major
artist and a few guests I'll name the various artist field by the major
artist and in most programs it will show under his or her collection,
but not in SB, it will be under Various artists also. Not perfect but
it works ok for me and I don't get all the artists plugging up the
menu. If you decide to do something like this it's pretty easy to
change using mp3tag, as long as your artist tags are in good shape. If
you decide to try it, do it on a couple of albums and if you like it I
can give you some tips to make it easy in mp3tag.

As long as the tags still contain these values SC will use them.
There's no way to get rid of them without actually changing the tags.

Compilations are tagged just like normal albums with an album title
(must be the same on all tracks), track artist and track title.
SC will recognise these albums as compilations and will list them under
various artists.
To have both artist and title in the artist tag is certainly not what I
call clean.
The problem seems to be that freedb only uses one artist field for the
album artist and not artist fields per track. Compilations in freedb
are usually tagged with "Various" as album artist and track artist and
track title seperated by "-" or "/" in the title field.
I have no clue why EAC puts these value into the artist field and not
the title field.
Some ripping programs let you split these values into seperate track
artist and track title fields prior to ripping the CD (e.g. grip on
linux can do this).
In mp3tag you can define actions to process a large number of tracks at
once. It should be possible to set up an action that splits the artist
field at any given seperator character and puts artist and title in
their respective tag fields.
Another option would be to use a musicbrainz tagger to automatically
tag those albums. The musicbrainz database makes use of track artists
and some more fields that are not present in freedb.
