Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Flac 1.1.4 released - faster & smaller!
First up: Josh you Rock! Flac is a superb codec and its changed everything about the way I listen to music. Thank you for your great work! I found a good DOS/windows batch file to convert files between earlier versions and 1.14: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=50993&view=findpost&p=462479 It says it works for 1.13 but it works just fine for 1.14. The beauty is that you can drop files/folders right on to the batch file (including folders with sub-folders). Both regular meta-data and replay-gain data remained intact. Remember to set your FLAC path and compression level before starting. After some brief testing I'll probably not bother re-compressing my entire collection now (for a single random album I saved 4.2mb in space) but I'm excited about better performance and smaller files in the future! ss. -- street_samurai street_samurai's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=199 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32744 ___ ripping mailing list ripping@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Flac 1.1.4 released - faster & smaller!
I should clarify--going from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 both at -5 was only a 2-3% size difference. I was comparing 1.1.2 at -5 to 1.1.3 at -8. That's around 5% (I only spot checked a few files too, so it's possible the actual difference would be different.) Still, it's worth doing. funkstar;181252 Wrote: > 1.1.3 added the ability to take an existing FLAC file and re-compress it > using the new algorithms. Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Flac 1.1.4 released - faster & smaller!
The standard, non-audiophile response is "lossless is lossless" and that as long as they decompress to the same WAV (which FLAC always does) that the difference in sound should be undetectable. There are always those who feel they can tell the difference though. The SB firmware will be using the same decompression routines so there should be no difference on that side (although, I assume they'll rev the firmware at some point with the 1.1.4 routines especially if there's a performance boost, or just to keep up). It's true that 500GB drives are cheap, but I estimated about a 5% file size difference if I went from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3--and in my setting that's about 15GB, or roughly 30 more CDs I can rip before I need to figure out how to hook up a new drive and move all my data around. That's worth it. If 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 is a similar gain, even more so. I figure a recompression process running in the background, replacing files one at a time, might take a month to run, but who cares, it's just making more space every night. Not if by "re-rip" you mean put the CD in a computer drive and extract it again. The point of using Flac is that you never lose anything. So if some future version of flac yields twice the compression, all you have to do is use flac to decompress it back to PCM, and then recompress it. This can be done in giant batches. You never have to touch your CDs again, never have to re-rip them. This does not address the implied question, which is how much better is the new compression for my music. This is unanswerable in general. You can easily test it on some samples from your collection.
