Hello Josh,

I deleted my post straight after posting as I thought I made a mistake
with my analysis.

But after double checking I can still see a 5-7% increase in decoding
time.

The machine is a HP ProLiant ML570 G3 running Red Hat Enterprise Linux
AS release 4, 2.6.9-34.ELsmp Kernel (64-bit). The CPUs are 4 Intel Xeon
3.33GHz.

I built flac from source with the default parameters.

Let me know if you need further information.

Thanks for all your work.

I did some test and got about 2% savings after transcoding from 1.1.2
to 1.1.4, both with -8 compression.

But surprisingly I noticed a 5% *increase* in decoding time with the
new files (yet smaller) with both 1.1.2 and 1.1.4 flac programs.

Yup, I've been using these, damned useful :)

Only problem (and he knows about them) is that for some reason .bat
files strip % characters from filenames so any that have % in the
path/filename never work. Some other characters like the caret (^) do
odd things to.

Meant I've found a few broken flacs in my collection but thanks to the
script I now verify the flacs that EAC creates :)

2007-02-20 Thread street_samurai

First up: Josh you Rock! Flac is a superb codec and its changed
everything about the way I listen to music. Thank you for your great
work!

I found a good DOS/windows batch file to convert files between earlier
versions and 1.14:

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=50993&view=findpost&p=462479

It says it works for 1.13 but it works just fine for 1.14. The beauty
is that you can drop files/folders right on to the batch file
(including folders with sub-folders). Both regular meta-data and
replay-gain data remained intact. Remember to set your FLAC path and
compression level before starting.

After some brief testing I'll probably not bother re-compressing my
entire collection now (for a single random album I saved 4.2mb in
space) but I'm excited about better performance and smaller files in
the future!

i don't have any encoding time data, just some compression
comparisons.

As you only compress once, i don't really mind how long it takes.
Although i think the difference between -5 and -8 on previous versions
was about 2x. This should be better in 1.1.4 going by the change logs.
I'll see what data i can put together when i get home next week.

I should clarify--going from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 both at -5 was only a 2-3%
size difference. I was comparing 1.1.2 at -5 to 1.1.3 at -8. That's
around 5% (I only spot checked a few files too, so it's possible the
actual difference would be different.) Still, it's worth doing.

1.1.3 added the ability to take an existing FLAC file and re-compress
it using the new algorithms. This preserves all the meta data within
the FLAC so you don't have to re-tag.

I think there are scripts (perl and batch files) that will run through
a complete library re-compressing everything as well as maintaining the
file modified/created dates and possibly adding album art to the meta
data as well.

I intend doing this at some point on my collection. As mrfantasy said,

in a lick for like test, but a lot of mine was compressed with -5 as

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Flac 1.1.4 released - faster & smaller!

2007-02-17 Thread mrfantasy

The standard, non-audiophile response is "lossless is lossless" and that
as long as they decompress to the same WAV (which FLAC always does) that
the difference in sound should be undetectable. There are always those
who feel they can tell the difference though. The SB firmware will be
using the same decompression routines so there should be no difference
on that side (although, I assume they'll rev the firmware at some point
with the 1.1.4 routines especially if there's a performance boost, or
just to keep up).

It's true that 500GB drives are cheap, but I estimated about a 5% file
size difference if I went from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3--and in my setting that's
about 15GB, or roughly 30 more CDs I can rip before I need to figure out
how to hook up a new drive and move all my data around. That's worth
it. If 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 is a similar gain, even more so.

I figure a recompression process running in the background, replacing
files one at a time, might take a month to run, but who cares, it's
just making more space every night.

NO, never. Not if by "re-rip" you mean put the CD in a computer drive
and extract it again.

The point of using Flac is that you never lose anything.
So if some future version of flac yields twice the compression, all you
have to do is use flac to decompress it back to PCM, and then recompress
it. This can be done in giant batches. You never have to touch your CDs
again, never have to re-rip them.

This does not address the implied question, which is how much better is
the new compression for my music. This is unanswerable in general.

You can easily test it on some samples from your collection.

The flac sourceforge site says "Improved compression with no impact on
format or decoding speed." but improving the compression ratio from 55%
to 53% is an improvement, but I would not consider it important when 500
GB disk drives are so cheap. Unless you have a really, really big library.

all IMHO, YMMV, etc.
